Turning Lane at Portage and Main ![]() A rant by: Anonymous Driving home from work everyday, I head south on Main and go into the second from the right lane to turn right onto Portage. There are clearly two signs warning drivers that you must turn right in this lane (except buses) and cannot go straight, however many drivers seem to ignore this rule. It usually wouldn't be a problem except for the fact that we are given a right turning light while those who are going straight still have a red. I'm never one to use my horn (my brother often chastises me for it, but I can't help it), but the amount of people I've been stuck behind who absolutely refuse to turn right have caused me to use it in this instance. And they ignore it, no matter how many people behind them are honking. I'm sure they're saying frustratedly "but I want to go straight!!!" just as I'm saying frustratedly "come on, turn right!" I'm sure this happens at other such lights in the city, but this is the one I deal with everyday. << Back Add a Comment Comments ( Add a Comment ) BalthazaarRamrod says: 2006-03-03 09:50:35 I think people know how to read, they just choose not to. Information on any topic is out there if you look for it, but people still ask dumb questions in class. Open you F&*@#( eyes long enough and you'll learn what's going on. Same can be said for driving a car. Grumpy says: 2006-03-05 13:42:19 Take a look at what you have to do to get a drivers licence: Correctly answer 24 multiple choice questions, take a ten min road test (half of which is consumed by proving you can parallel park) then you're out on the road stopped in the wrong lane facing a green turn signal... Until we require more comprehensive testing and training, we're stuck sharing the roads with people who really have no idea of the most basic rules of the road. Anonymous says: 2006-03-06 22:44:12 *Sigh* I think all of these examplers are instances of "I get exempt from this this time because I really have to turn/use this road/go straight right now because I'm running late to where I absolutely have to be and the world will end if I'm not there". So many think they're above the rules "just this one time". jane says: 2006-03-07 20:04:29 Rules are arbitrary. Who sets them? Why do they make them as they do? I prefer to live by my own rules, after all I am the most important person on the roadways in this crappy burg called Winnipeg. Don't believe anything the jar-head government of the day tells you .... Driving is a right .... not a privilege. In reality, I own the roadways so I can do as I please. You can be free in this country if you are willing to pay for this freedom. It's called paying a fine. BalthazaarRamrod says: 2006-03-08 11:41:06 I'm gonna guess that you're laying the sarcasm on, but really... causing accidents and being a tit in general isn't a right. iwa288 says: 2006-03-10 09:52:19 A view from Toronto... I am a Winnipegger and I can tell you after so many years driving amongst the idiots in Toronto Winnipeg driving is a treat. Anonymous says: 2006-06-30 14:43:51 Winnipeg drivers are the most ignorant drivers I have ever seen. I've driven in a dozen or so cities, and Winnipeg is by FAR the worst. No signals, no stopping at lights, ridiculous speeding. People just think that they're invincible behind the wheel, and that makes them think they can do anything they want to. Which is total bullsh*t. Mitch says: 2006-06-30 14:55:40 About 7 or 8 years ago my brother got a ticket for driving straight through the turn sign you're speaking of. So don't feel too bad. Some people do get punished. 30something says: 2006-06-30 16:23:32 I have to agree that Winnipeg has some pretty ignorant drivers. I don't know why that happens here of all places. Rules of the road don't seem to be followed. Anonymous says: 2006-07-01 09:15:37 What bugs me more is the way some streets are designed. I LOVE intersections where there is an advance right or left turn light, but the lane itself isn't a dedicated turn light. So if you're turning you're lucky if the cars ahead of are also all turning, otherwise everyone sits and waits for the person going straight to get his or her light. One place is drives me nuts is on Broadway at Osborne, heading east. At rush hour the traffic can be backed up for two blocks. Thanks to the signalling (and the no right turn on red lights) it can take several cycles to get through the intersection. BigB says: 2006-07-06 12:00:38 What i love is the turning lane onto Main from Portage. Heading east on portage turning North on Main. Over the years i have counted dozens of people that have seen the green arrow (facing up) for traffic to continue eastbound on Portage and have turned into oncoming traffic to get onto Main. Idiots! Not to mention the fact that this light sequence hasnt changed in the 12 yrs i have been driving in Winnipeg; makes you wonder why so many ppl dont know how to drive at wpgs second busiest interesection! |

It's a well known fact that people don't read. Especially when in rush hour. You're also not supposed to turn on to Donald from Portage, but people do that too. You're also not allowed to drive down most of Graham, but people do that too. Goddamnit people, why can't you learn how to read?
