STOP signs ![]() A rant by: rossdudley Recently there was an article in one of the papers about putting up more stop signs in Winnipeg. What for? The ones that are already up don't get used most of the time. I can't seem to go anywhere without watching people running stop signs, especially four way stop signs. Hey Winnipeg, wake the f*@k up and remember, when approaching a stop sign one should STOP at or before the sign then proceed with caution. Not roll past the sign half way into the intersection then proceeding without ever coming to a complete stop. You're going to eventually kill someone. Also, if you're going to insist on talking on the phone while driving at least do so while still paying attention to the road. If you can't, and that's most of you cellphoners, pull over and get out of my way! << Back Add a Comment Comments ( Add a Comment ) Anonymous says: 2005-11-10 14:53:00 And I thought that stop signs were a suggestion. FreedomFries says: 2005-11-10 15:37:42 If the have a white "O" around them, they're optional. ;) joejoetime says: 2005-11-10 17:09:57 That's an oxymoron to talk on a cellphone and pay attention to driving at the same time. It just doesn't work. Get off your phones you idiots! ReedSolomon says: 2005-11-11 09:08:59 the problem is there are too many useless stop signs. when people are told to do something unreasonable, they wont do it. when laws are stupid, people will ignore them. thats why people speed, and thats why people ignore stop signs, because their existance is stupid. speed limits of 50 down main street so you dont hit some drunk coming out of the bar.. feh. go into the north end and look at how many 4 way stops there are every street. way too many. thats because idiots let their kids out, then when they get hit by a car demand stop signs as the solution. the solution is teach your idiot kids not to cross the street when a car is coming. BigB says: 2005-11-11 19:08:59 The part I loved most about when i lived in the country was when you come to an intersection on gravel. No signs at all. If you saw a car coming you'd either stop or speed up. Maybe we need a little freedom in our city. Bring in more merge lanes rather then stop signs. The merger is responsible for making sure its clear to go. Rather then everyone stopping and waiting. And for crap sake, don't replace stop signs with lights. That just makes me break the law more! Anonymous says: 2006-02-08 23:53:13 Stop signs are a waste of life. Thats why people dont stop. The rest of the world carnt be wrong. All four way stops should be replaced by one road having right of way and the intersecting road yielding. Thats how it is all across europe. Why make 100% of the traffic come to a complete stop when clearly there is no traffic to stop for. If Manitoba had a half decent driving test and winnipegers wernt a danger to themselves and others, we wouldnt need to stop every block. You can drive any where in the world and driving is almost a pleasure. You get within 100 miles of winnipeg in any direction and the drivers start driving like f**kin; lunatics. I dont know what goes through you guy's minds. I could rant for hours about winnipeg drivers. Winnipeges - nice people - SH*TE drivers. nekochan says: 2006-02-09 00:53:16 Does a stop sign have a life to be wasting? big0joe says: 2006-02-09 17:43:42 no he ment stop signs are a waste of our lifes. it dosent take much time at one time to stop. but it adds up. Rigel says: 2006-08-12 19:50:43 While it's true this city has too many stop signs and unsynchronized traffic signals, there's another problem in this category: timer-controlled stop lights that hold up traffic even when there's no one attempting to cross. Possibly the worst one in this category is at Route 90 and St. Matthews. Several times I've been caught there on Sundays or holidays when there are zero vehicles on St. Matthews; yet between 12 & 20 cars were held up waiting for precisely nothing except wasting gas and time besides contributing to pollution. This shows how phony the city is when it installs no-idling signs and preaches energy conservation to us. Yet it's OK to hold up traffic for absolutely no good reason. Another intersection like this is at McPhillips and Kingsbury, and I'm certain there are plenty more like these. What should be done is to implant weight sensors at such corners so that the lights are triggered only when a vehicle is attempting to cross; then they should change as soon as the intersection is cleared. These devices are used extensively on freeway entry ramps in the US and probably in some places in this country though certainly not Manitoba. The sensors are embedded on the freeway itself, and when traffic is far enough back from the merge area between the highway and the entry ramp, they activate a green light at the bottom of the ramp indicating there's enough time for one car to safely get ahead of the oncoming traffic. Winnipeg's a long way from needing any of these, but they can be utilized at the type of corners described above. Felix says: 2006-08-13 22:34:54 I have noticed, that at some traffic lights, especially the ones closer to the Perimeter, going on to a main drag like Main or Henderson, have weight sensors, and there is no way the light will turn green with the weight of a Harley. You have to turn right, and then make a U turn, or just go through the red light. IJustWannaSayThis says: 2006-08-14 08:10:13 I agree - this city has WAAAY too many stop signs, especially in the older suburbs. In my part of Transcona, to get from my house to my bank (a distance of just under 3 km), I have to pass through no fewer than 10 4-way or 3-way stops! To simply go a half kilometre I have to pass through 5 of the Red Devils! What this city desperately needs is about a million less stop signs. Not every intersection is created equal - some roads are less important and should have a stop sign while the main road allows free-flowing traffic. For those of you who know the Transcona area, think about Kildare. Plenty of traffic and yet it has dozens of 4-way stops along it. I guarantee that at least 7 of 10 intersections with a 4-way stop could be better handled by either a simple 2-way stop and/or yields. Of course don't even get me started on the idea of roundabouts. That's far too progressive for a place like Winnipeg! |
