Make the Disraeli a 6-Lane Artery

A rant by: Rigel

Now that the city has decided on a joint public-private venture to upgrade the Disraeli Freeway (it's no true freeway; just examine one in any American city or even Calgary, and you'll know for certain), it would be a good idea to add a couple of lanes to what has always been a painfully narrow thoroughfare, especially in winter. Retaining four lanes might be acceptable if the city had had the least bit of foresight 30-40 years ago and replaced the Louise, Redwood and Arlington Bridges with proper 4-lane structures. Those bridges have been out-of-date for about a half-century, and most of the people on this site will be dead, buried and long-forgotten before we'll ever see any improvement here. That's why the Disraeli needs to be widened and never mind any crap about using the money for rapid-transit. Even if cars get more fuel-efficient and more buses start being used, the roads and bridges need to be maintained, particularly in Winnipeg's climate. Unfortunately Winnipeg still retains its minor league mentality when it comes to road building and maintenance, so I doubt if six lanes are a likelihood.
