Manitoba Moose Fighting

A rant by: jack49

I encourage anyone who has not been to a moose game this year, or ever, to go check one out. Last year they had an amazing season that kept the fans on the edge of their seats througout the playoffs, and Im hoping this year will be the same.

This is my rant though. Why is it that everyone cheers when there is a fight? It is hockey not boxing. Everyone that cheeers is setting a bad example for our youth. We are telling them that fighting is a good way to settle disputes and that kids should be violent. next time you go to a game think about the kid sitting next to you who will be affected by your actions. if we all just frowned upon the stupid fights maybe the game would get better.

not only that, they play fighting music when a fight breaks out so its not only the fans but the legue that endorses it. were more sophisticated than to settle our disputes by fighting, cmon winnipeg lets show them the real sport of hockey and not focus on the physical

Hockey is a physical sport, plain and simple. Sure hockey could exist without fighting, but it wouldn't be as fun to watch. People go to games to be entertained, fighting is entertaining for the majority of the people at the games therefore there should continue to be fighting in hockey, at least at a professional level.
BigB says: 2005-11-29 23:15:22
That is in fact proven. Even in childrens hockey where they do not allow contact there is contact. But it is outside of the boards, the parents fight and kill eachother just to get that aggretion out. It's a fact of life, deal with it. your not at the opera pavoratti!

Your a frickin douchebag!! Hockey is Fighting!!! You can't be serious that hockey shouldnt have fighting. You think soccer shoulding have kicking??

Who the Hell cares about the Moose? They are a joke. I know a ton of hockey fans in Winnipeg and not 1 give a rat's ass. This is an NHL town, plain and simple. Moose tickets are a complete waste of money. Esp. considering the concession prices at the MTS Centre. $11.00 for a burger and a beer to watch farm-team hockey? Thanks- i'll pass.
CreamSoda says: 2005-11-30 00:41:49
Seriously.. this rant must be a joke. How do you protest fighting in hockey? You think it is better to eliminate the fighting for your children's sake or for your own? Maybe we should eliminate fighting in boxing.. Even better, we can convince the NFL to make it touch football and not tackle. I wonder how that would go over at the Superbowl. Are you going to ban Jackie Chan from your tv because your kids might see it and start kicking other kids at school? Perhaps if your gene pool is so easily influenced you should refrain from watching any more porn, since we dont want you trying anymore of those moves either.... Grow some balls buddy.. maybe you should start ranting openly at the games about your distaste for hockey fights, im sure soon after you will experience one yourself..

^^^I 100% agree. Sorry bud, but I can't really get excited about seeing "Joe Blow" of the Peoria Rivermen at the MTS Centre playing hockey. I suggest people support the Moose and Bombers, but seek their live hockey action outside of Winnipeg. Save up your money and see a game in your favourite NHL team's hometown. That's worth 2 years of Moose season tix in my opinion.
Anonymous says: 2005-11-30 00:45:02
(typo)^^ I suggest people support the GOLDEYES and Bombers, I meant to say. Boycott the Moose... maybe then the Moose/MTS Centre will wake up and realize we're not gonna settle for this 3rd-rate hockey.
WinterSix says: 2005-11-30 08:03:15
^^ Acording to the last comment, parents should stop going to their kids hockey games because it's not professional. Also, buddy, you think Goldeyes are professional??? I have nothing against them, I actually enjoy the games, but you can find the same quality baseball at an elmwood giants game. These guys are no more than double "A". Maybe you should go to a moose game before you say that they suck.
jack49 says: 2005-11-30 09:09:36
I'm saying that hockey is more than just fighting. Look at the World Juniors there is no fighting, but excellent hockey. And to all you moose bashers, where do you think NHLers come from? They have to start somewhere! If people didnt support AHL, NHL would have no new players because the AHL league would fold.
Anonymous says: 2005-11-30 09:51:16
Why should anyone in Winnipeg CARE about the Vancouver Canucks farm team? Didn't Winnipeg have a rivalry with the Canucks for 15 years? And again, I cannot get excited about seeing "Joe Sixpack" of the Syracuse Crunch face off against a couple of Vancouver Canuck prospects. At least the Goldeyes belong to Winnipeg...
drumbum1977 says: 2005-11-30 11:35:59
Fighting is a part of hockey, and anyone who has played at a higher level then the normal joe blow will tell you that. Anyone who says fighting does't belong hasn't played at a high level and doesn't understand why it is such a huge part.

Saw the highlights from the Moose game last night on t.v. Looked like there were 4,500 there (even though "announced" attendance was 6,300). This in a city and surrounding area of maybe 130,000 hockey fans. Winnipeg has MOOSE FEVER!
Anonymous says: 2005-11-30 14:20:23
Well then, there you go. If Winnipeg can't draw that many people to a Moose game with significantly lower prices than an NHL game, then all hope is lost. Winnipeg's not a hockey city, it's an event city. If the NHL were by some miracle to come back here, how many people would they draw to a Tuesday night game against, say, Nashville? Or Carolina. But by all means, boycott the Moose. That'll show the NHL how much we love hockey!
BigB says: 2005-11-30 14:28:03
Boycotting moose games is stupid. But so is screwing your pet goat, but that doesn't seem to stop you. Comparing NHL hockey with Moose is like comparing apples to oranges. I used to go to every Jets game i could when they were around. That was excitement. Seeing actual professional talent was what it was all about. The only reason i go to the moose games now is to sit in the corporate box and drink free booze. If the team could offer that out to all the spectators then maybe they could fill the stands.

1. Winnipeg and the Vancouver Canucks had a rivalry for 17 years. I think the hockey world can forgive us if we're not scooping up tickets and heading to the arena to cheer on the Canucks farm team. Really- why should anyone in Winnipeg care, other than the fact "It's better than nothing" and "It's all we have"..... 2. If people don't yet realize that Winnipeg is an NHL city and can support a team again, selling out a few Moose games sure won't change their opinion. AHL and NHL are 2 very different things, and Winnipeg is an NHL city. The Moose have been here for 10 years and I've never heard anyone talking about them in "real life", nor have I seen 1 person wearing any of their related merchandise. I notice tons of ppl. wearing NHL gear though (seeing more and more ppl. wearing JETS hats and shirts all the time)
Anonymous says: 2005-11-30 14:37:40
How come when Winnipeg has NHL exhibition games (featuring 2 teams that aren't from Winnipeg), they draw around 14,000- at higher ticket prices than the Moose? How can this be? I thought every sports fan in Winnipeg was dirt poor!
Anonymous says: 2005-11-30 16:32:02
If the Moose make the playoffs this year, they won't go far. Vancouver Canucks will also be in the playoffs, and they'll have our 4 or 5 best players on the bench or sitting in the pressbox at GM Place. Ah, gotta love AHL hockey!

I think the fourth reply to this rant tells us all we need to know about hockey. I haven't heard the word "douchebag" used in a conversation since I was in junior high. Now I'm not suggesting that the writer is only 14, but instead that hockey appeals to our inner kid. Hockey is about mullets, fighting, and for making an idiot out of yourself in the stands. I remember at my first hockey game looking around the old barn in wide eyed wonder as the crowd chanted "bulls**t" over a call made by the ref against the Jets. I quicktly realized that a hockey game was an alternate reality, and in this reality it's okay for two guys to drop their gloves and beat the living crap out of each other as the crowd stands and cheers. Try as we might, we will never take fighting out of the North American game of hockey.
DesertEagle10 says: 2005-11-30 19:59:24
Hey jack49, I'm going to take a wild stab and guess that your an American. No true Canadian would say a thing like that.
jack49 says: 2005-11-30 22:43:58
Born and Raised in WPG, and i was just making a point. Your probably an american for making arrogant assumptions about people.
DesertEagle10 says: 2005-12-01 22:11:43
Alright jack, let's do it your way then but why stop at hockey? Why not take the fighting out of say...boxing? How about mixed martial arts? The fighting in those two sports just takes away from the good walking in circles doesn't it? Fighting is as much a part of hockey as the players and goalies. Arrogant, hmph!
withoutprejudice says: 2005-12-05 23:17:33
FIGHTING IS AWESOME, VIOLENCE IS GREAT, HECK, WAR IS AWESOME TOO! (Not) You live by the sword, you die by the sword...
BigB says: 2005-12-08 14:04:02
prejud, wats ur point? Was that sarcasm? Bcs fighting and killing is cool. Thats why everyone watches movies like "saving private ryan" and play video games where you go around killing people. The comment about live and die by the sword, wtf is that. Sure its a phrase that has been used for 100's of years, but what relevence does it have w/ hockey? It's more something to be said over tea in the 1700's.
withoutprejudice says: 2005-12-08 16:20:21
This means that violent people will be treated violently themselves at one point. In other words, violence goes nowhere. The more we promote it, the more kids think it's okay to go beating some other kid up (Aka bullying). That's what I meant. And yes, it's sarcasm.
FreedomFries says: 2005-12-08 16:44:51
^^ I have to agree with most of the comments here, the above poster may be right that violence does not lead anywhere, but it sure is fun to watch!
