Potholes too hard to fix??? ![]() A rant by: DisgruntledUSCitizen Okay I am not even a citizen here but I pay taxes just like any other joe. What the hell is up with the potholes in this city. I was on the corner of Scott where the Car wash is and I almost lost a tire. I was only going 35. There are plenty of people to do the work but they fill up the holes with cheap materials that wash away in a day by the run-off from the car wash. There were two cops parked there when I hit the hole. One said "mamm they should really fix that hole". Then he said he couldn't do much about it since it wasn't really a police matter. How hard is it to make a phone call. I call and they don't care. The city workers say that it is just a bad area. I guess all of Scott Street is a bad area because it is pretty much all riddled with potholes. When I do lose a tire in that spot I am sure Mr. Custard Cop will smile and wave because that is the polite thing to do. << Back Add a Comment Comments ( Add a Comment ) FreedomFries says: 2005-10-14 13:28:47 Your rant inspired a new bumper sticker! You say the same thing in every article... BigB says: 2005-10-21 09:50:02 thanks for coming out. But i'm pretty sure that my fans and nemisis alike found your comments irritating. If you want to dis me, pick one of my comments that i'm setting myself up. But when i write about the aging process of concrete and the effects weather has on it i hardly think you can state that all my rants are the same. Good luck, hopefully next time you can actually burn me rather then make me shake my head. 30something says: 2005-11-21 01:43:47 well what DO you expect the cops to do? They are only doing their job the best they can do, just because they are COPS doesn't mean they have magic powers to fix all potholes, hello? sorry don't get me wrong, i do see your point, i hate the pot holes too, but please don't blame the police for this. Anonymous says: 2005-11-21 11:33:26 I blame mom's like her that are on welfare. If we didn't have to support her lazy ass we could have better roads. there i said it. Anonymous says: 2006-02-24 03:52:34 i wonder if the potholes have anything to do with the fact winnipeg is built on the bottom of a soggy old dried up lake.hmmmmm we are living the real life of spongebob square pants. Anonymous says: 2006-02-24 03:54:06 we could all start taking the bus and let the city pay for repairing bus tires BigB says: 2006-02-24 09:24:43 I am still laughing at the sponge bob square pants comment. Excellent. Road conditions are all dependent on the base that is layed. In BC they put down the base a year in advance. Then they pile 6' of material ontop of the base to give it weight to pack it down over time. This is a far more effective way then our rollers running over the base once and then a fat porkchop saying its good bcs he did a "walk test". The reason we have more potholes and this year speed bumps on our roads is the freeze/thaw cycle. We had a mild winter and when the ground is contstantly freezing and then thawing it heaves like a mother. nekochan says: 2006-02-25 11:25:25 God dammnit people, go back to high school. It's called erosion, okay? BigB is correct. What we need to do now is stop worrying about our streets and work on the flying car. Clouds don't have pot holes. To all the other idiots in this rant, I bite my thumb at you. 30something says: 2006-02-25 12:34:04 I saw the funniest thing yesterday! Some a-hole in an SUV speeding in the parking lane to pass all the cars that were ony going the speed limit, hit a pot hole and must have damaged the front end of his car! BWA HAHAHAHAHAHA! Sometimes I love the potholes!!! Anonymous says: 2006-03-03 15:45:21 The roads in the US of A aren't so great. My friend cracked his wheel in a huge pothole on I-5 last weekend... Anonymous says: 2006-03-25 22:25:42 The city actually dug up and my street only to make it wider last year. It wasn't even in need of work. What a waste of money. Money goes to other things which are a waste. When will the city wake up. The pothole situation is ridiculous already. BigB says: 2006-04-26 15:35:11 Do you know for a fact that they pulled up the street just to widen it? Sometimes ppl are too narrowminded and dont see the big picture. they could have had to do work on culverts or sewers under that roadway. Or perhaps the city has plans for routing traffic. It would make sense to make a road more capable of holding the strain of increased traffic prior to routing it that way. Or could it maybe have to do w/ truck traffic and road restriction. laundryqueen says: 2006-04-26 20:50:21 Actually we received a notice in each of our mailboxes with the details of what was going on and when. I think I would make sure I knew the facts before posting :P BalthazaarRamrod says: 2006-04-26 22:03:21 My undies still have a skidmark. Why are you posting when they're not clean? Anonymous says: 2006-05-01 09:38:00 so ummmm did n e one stop to think that the city acually does have the money? Ottawa seems to be dishing out alot of money to the province in the form of gas taxes ...... but the thing is, is that money was intended for the roads of Manitoba!! the question i have is ... why TF are we still waiting for Doer to put his hand in the dusty pocket of his pants and throw some change at the situation!! you wanna be mad at someone BigB? be mad at him not the cops like they have n e thing to do with the potholes *shakes her head* stupid yank BalthazaarRamrod says: 2006-05-01 10:05:51 Did someone say something? I don't respond to people posting dumb comments as anonymous. Get a scren name. BigB says: 2006-05-01 15:06:32 The difference with Manitoba roads and Winnipeg roads is that they are on two different budgets. Manitoba puts their money into new highways and resurfacting old ones. So if the government allots money to Manitoba it really has no effect on Winnipeg except for Route 90 and other highways that go within city limits. If you are looking for a fight w/ me anon please get a login name and come on down. I'm always looking for a conflict. Anonymous says: 2006-05-17 10:57:08 Regarding the freeze/thaw component, I have seen a lot more freezing/thawing in a typical SW Ontario winter than I ever see in a Manitoba winter. It may not be as many cycles, but the cycles are certainly shorter, i.e. the weather in SW Ontario will fluctuate a lot more over the winter, but the overall number of months experiencing this freeze/thaw cycle might be less. In any case, other places have it at least as bad as Manitoba, and yet the roads don't look like they've been through a war. And these are new-ish roads I'm talking about. I've lived in Manitoba for 7 years and I've already seen roads be built and crumble in that time. Something I find fascinating are the seams in the road, running along the center of the road, and the ones running across the width of the road. This might seem shocking, but guess where the bulk of the erosion, and thus potholes comes from - right, those seams! I know there have to be seams to allow for expansion, road heaving, etc., but how is it other areas don't seem to have the problem that we do? Another issue is curbing. I happened to notice today on my walk to work that the curbing is actually a part of the road. In most places the curbs are laid separately from the road. Is that a good or bad thing? I don't know, thought I'd add it for discussion. BigB says: 2006-05-17 11:12:28 The first sentence is all i read. I couldn\'t go on knowing how stupid your comment had started off. Having a temp that hoovers around 0 doesnt mean the freeze/thaw is more constant. Radical neg and then radical pos is what creates the heaving. And if you were in wpg this winter you would understand what that is all about. THE LAW HAS SPOKEN! Anonymous says: 2006-05-18 07:40:48 BigB, if you're yapping at me, you'd do wise to read all of what I wrote. The temperature fluctuations are important and I'm not just talking about a difference of a few degrees. Having said that, the typical Winnipeg winter doesn't have the fluctuations like you see in a place like SW Ontario. It's cold and it stays cold for the great majority of the winter. This winter has been an anomoly - you can hardly call this winter in Manitoba the norm. Sounds to me like you've got some sort of interest in the status quo! BigB says: 2006-05-18 20:57:13 Get a login. This way i can mock your name while i dis your stupidity. The reg ranters genereally dont read more then 2 lines from anyone under anon. You want an discussion then you have to get a login. Plus you can read about your mother in 'the back lane'. ICED OUT BENZ twistedmanitoba says: 2006-05-20 00:50:07 those seems ANON are for the drastic weather this way the roads can shrink and expand as the weather changes i know i know we all wish we could have fabulous roads like rich old Ontario but facts are facts we do what we can with what we have if you have not noticed Manitoba is not suckling on the teet of the federal government as much as Ontario is and everytime we try to get money for the obvious infrastructure faults here we just end up getting screwed for example look at the gas tax issue that was supposed to go to the roads here in Manitoba but we find out later that the federal government put a hidden claus in the bill that specifically said that the moneys should not be used for the roads when that was the main reason why we even asked for it SOLMoFo says: 2008-01-06 13:22:31 I think I just figured this out... we can kill two birds with one stone here! Just give all of our prostitutes and squeegee kids shovels and bags of asphalt! They're gonna be out there anyway, rain, shine, or freezing cold (more than what can be said about city workers). They could fix our roads, and finally earn the respect they so richly deserve. Of course, this means BigB will get his roads done first, but ain't that the way... and 30something's customers are starting to dwindle, so she needs something to do. IJustWannaSayThis says: 2008-01-11 10:14:46 I can't believe I missed this comment: "facts are facts we do what we can with what we have if you have not noticed Manitoba is not suckling on the teet of the federal government as much as Ontario". Twistedmanitoba, ARE YOU BLIND?! Manitoba, being a "have not" province is a far bigger drain on the Canadian economy, even for its size, than is Ontario. Ontario residents pay tax money so that socialist governments like Doer's can have the kinds of programs they did. If Manitoba were ever left to fend for itself it would only be a matter of a few years before it was so broke it was pulling down The Golden Boy to melt it down to pay for services. A quick check of the federal government site shows the amount of money going to Manitoba equals $2,996 per person, but Ontario only receives $1,641 per person, almost half the amount Manitoba receives. If you're going to spout off, at least spout off facts! |

I usually don’t concern myself with the Osborne area; Its where all the rejects from the north end are sent. The reason these roads haven’t been fixed is probably because our governing officials feel the need to spend the money on the people that actually pay their taxes J. The reason Winnipeg has so many potholes is because of our drastic climate changes. We are one of the few places in the world that sees 35 above and 40 below. This constant freeze/thaw causes the aggregate in concrete to shrink and swell. By doing so this causes pop-outs and shifting. Shifting forms cracks and heaving makes the pothole. (the constant traffic works as a jackhammer to bite away at the loose concrete). The problem is we are a poor province and really can’t afford to upkeep the numerous streets that we have w/o increasing property taxes. By doing so, our low cost of living really doesn’t look so low and thus creates less migrating to our lowly city. If we had population like the USA we could have better roadways. The law has spoken.
