The ant & the grasshopper...... ![]() A rant by: BigB CLASSIC VERSION: The ant works hard in the withering heat all summer long, building his house and laying up supplies for the winter. The grasshopper thinks he's a fool, and laughs and dances and plays the summer away. Come winter, the ant is warm and well fed. The shivering grasshopper has no food or shelter, so he dies out in the cold. THE END THE WINNIPEG/MANITOBA VERSION: The ant works hard in the withering heat all summer long, building his house and laying up supplies for the winter. The grasshopper thinks he's a fool, and laughs and dances and plays the summer away. Come winter, the ant is warm and well fed. So far, so good, eh? The shivering grasshopper calls a press conference and demands to know why the ant should be allowed to be warm and well fed while others less fortunate, like him, are cold and starving. The CBC shows up to provide live coverage of the shivering grasshopper, with cuts to a video of the ant in his comfortable warm home with a table laden with food. Winnipeggers and the rest of Canadians are stunned that in a country of such wealth, this poor grasshopper is allowed to suffer so while others have plenty. The NDP, the CAW and the Coalition Against Poverty demonstrate in front of the ant's house. The CBC, interrupting an Inuit cultural festival special from Nunavut with breaking news, broadcasts them singing "We Shall Overcome." Sven Robinson rants in an interview with Pamela Wallin that the ant has gotten rich off the backs of grasshoppers, and calls for an immediate tax hike on the ant to make him pay his "fair share". In response to polls, the Liberal Government drafts the Economic Equity and Grasshopper Anti-Discrimination Act, retroactive to the beginning of the summer. The ant's taxes are reassessed, thank you Manitoba NDP Gov't, and he is also fined for failing to hire grasshoppers as helpers. Without enough money to pay both the fine and his newly imposed retroactive taxes, his home is confiscated by the government. The ant moves to the US, and starts a successful agribiz company. The CBC later shows the now fat grasshopper finishing up the last of the ant's food, though Spring is still months away, while the government house he is in, which just happens to be the ant's old house, crumbles around him because he hasn't bothered to maintain it. Inadequate government funding is blamed, Roy Romanow is appointed to head a commission of enquiry that will cost $10,000,000. The grasshopper is soon dead of a drug overdose, the Toronto Star blames it on the obvious failure of government to address the root causes of despair arising from social inequity. The abandoned house is taken over by a gang of immigrant spiders, praised by the government for enriching Canada's multicultural diversity, who promptly set up a marijuana grow op and terrorize the community. Get a user name, you tool! BigB says: 2005-12-05 22:08:46 I was just talking about an ant and grasshpr. WTF is his problem. I'm w/ Roscoe btw, I only read ur comment bcs it's my article. FreedomFries says: 2005-12-05 23:00:58 BigB, I have to admit, that was a lot more creative than most of your drunken ramblings. You still need serious mental help, but at least when society doesn't accept you, you can turn to writing childrens books about ants and grasshoppers under a fake alias. withoutprejudice says: 2005-12-05 23:14:57 I got that Email too and I think it's very close to reality. CreamSoda says: 2005-12-05 23:55:42 God Dam grasshoppers! DavidHagborg says: 2005-12-08 08:29:04 The analogy is done with clever insight. However, it does not show much compassion for the ant, who cannot see beyond the next SUV, RRSP payment and cruise to where she is going. Churchill said that anyone not liberal at age 16 had no heart, and anyone not conservative at age 60 has no head. However, after age 60, one has the possibility to return a bit more to the heart, as one approaches the end. Further, a person may do this with more freedom, as no one takes an old codger seriously. Being able to help and connect with 1 grasshopper whilst being scammed by 99 others enables the development of a raison d'ętre. Anonymous says: 2005-12-08 13:36:52 You forgot to mention that the human being, full of complexity and compassion and hate, came by and stepped all over your little bug analogy, rendering it useless. Thinking in Black & White only makes you \"greyer\"... 30something says: 2005-12-08 16:37:46 Wow! That's a great analogy! I love it! BalthazaarRamrod says: 2005-12-12 08:50:42 I am the first poster. THETRUTH says: 2005-12-18 07:50:14 Go down town with a hundred dollar bill, well dressed and no pocket change to put in the meter. see how many people will help you. not many. You look as though you should have the change, it makes it even harder than a pan handler. More than once it has been illustrated to me that Bigb does not give a crap about anyone that is not willing to help them selves. I am all for that. no one will help you. be greedy hoard as much as you can and look after you and yours. I know there is some bleeding heart out there going, no no no. What ever you are entitlied to your opinion as long as you don't vote. The cheapest bastard in the world is not one that has been rich, it is that one that staredted poor and worked for every cent they have. I can not blame the colour of my skin or my sex or religion as to why I was poor or how I got out of it. I decided to be The ant, and what we need to do is let the grasshopper freeze, then my taxes will go down. Otherwise we all will, better the grasshoppers than those who are smart. BigB says: 2005-12-21 00:09:56 I like what you have to say 'truth' although it is a shade tactless. I guess what I am trying to portray is "don't hate the playa, hate the game". The system is the problem at hand. It's not that the ant didn't want to help the grasshopper. It's just that he shouldn't have to give everything that he has worked hard to prepare for to the grasshopper. Look at the middle-class citizens. They are the people that get screwed over the most with taxes. They aren't smart enough to find loop-holes and write-off's and they aren't dumb enough to abuse the system. So they work hard and pay exuberant amounts. If we are going to give out welfare we should use it as a loan. The government borrows out the money while the user is in a “rough time” but then once their credit is up they have to start making payments (at realistic interest rates). The average Joe has a credit card at between 11 and 27% interest. So charging 18% on any money borrowed to a “less fortunate” is fair. Give the person time to go to school, have a child, get a surgery, etc. But when that time expires they either start making payments or get jail time. If we don’t start making the grasshoppers accountable for their actions we are really showing the world just how foolish us Canadians can be. |

You know, I consider myself a fairly conservative Canadian. To be honest, I agree with you in part. Your microcosm is extremely simplified and you should really re-asess your beliefs. If you think the world and our society is so black and white, you must really get a kick out of color TV.
