People who give money to panhandling slobs make me SICK!!!!!!!!

A rant by: 30something

Okay I know I complain overly about the panhandlers but this rant isn't about them. They made their choice and I can see that to them it's a good one BECAUSE SO MANY WORKING STIFFS WILL FORK OVER THEIR MONEY TO THESE ABLEBODIED PEOPLE WHICH ALLOWS MOST BUSINESSES TO BE DESPERATE TO HIRE WORKERS!

Here's the story; Hopefully the losers in question will read this one day. I was driving down Ness westbound towards Rte 90 around 11:30 this morning (Saturday) when what did I see but not one but TWO ablebodied young men in about their mid to late 20's (one with a spectacular unkempt beard which would ensure his unemployability) on the two traffic boulevards leading to Rte 90.

I stopped at a red light and watched as not one but TWO idiot drivers leaned out their window to give this healthy looking young man some cash. What is with you losers? Do you think he REALLY needs it? If you want to give your money away why don't you send it to people in the third world who REALLY need it? Manitobans where the unemployment rate is at an all time low do not need to be donated too. I had just come from Tim Hortons and Canadian tire on St James, both of which were advertising "Help Wanted" to see this guy who is only begging because he would prefer NOT TO WORK, in other words, he's a LAZY A$$ bum, but what keeps him doing this? The fact that losers give him money!!!!!!!!!!

No one should give these guys anything since there's a shortage of skilled workers right across the country, and if these professional spongers had any ambition they'd try to get the proper training. Mind you, with the type of staying power most of them have plus their various addictions, they wouldn't last more than five weeks in a 5-year apprenticeship program. Meanwhile the police should put pressure on them to prevent their loitering. This worked in New York and if we didn't have so many bleeding hearts in this country, it could work here as well.

didn't they make it illegal to give money to panhandlers in Las Vegas? Why don't they try it here? I know the anti-poverty organizations would freak but we could argue against them saying there are so many jobs out there, and there are so many organizations that help the poor out there.

i agree with you, but i don\'t think it\'s any of our business who realize that it is wrong to make the whole city stop giving money to people who can easily get a job here in peg city.. i think if we do, it\'s like were putting our shoes in the same direction where extremists go..then ofcourse when this happens the government will then decide to make do with what the extremists want and take more money from uncomplaining people who don\'t really care about what they were protesting about. i realized this when this one panhandler came up to me while i was waiting for my bus to go to school and instead of giving her the change i had in my pocket right away, i decided to ask her some questions..i asked her why she was pandhandling and the answer i got was \"i only last a week of work everytime i get a job. everytime i get a job they just keep letting me go because i have a rare mental illness that makes me out of a job everytime i get one\"...if she had jobs shouldn\'t she file for disability of some sort whenever she can\'t get a job because of her illness? why is she pandhandling if she tells me she has an \"out of a job mental illness\"? so instead of giving her the change in my pocket because of her lying to me i told her that there are plenty of opportunities out there to get help, plus she should get some professional help with her illness. when i got home that day i researched on this mental illness thing she told me she had and to my conclusion and assumption there is no such thing! she not only made me mad by lying to me, she also provoked me to see if she was lying or not..i wasn\'t real happy about that and finding out the truth after all..it wasn;t even necessary. i mean she just wanted some spare change to go on about her day.. trying to make \"the living\" and i didn\'t give her waht she asked for because i\'m so accustomed to the consequences a person must suffer when they lie, cheat or steal...and all she needed was some lousy change. honestly i felt pretty bad and sorry for her. not only have i dissed her by implying to her that she shouldn\'t be doing what she is doing because our society thinks its stupid and remorseful by saying the TRUTH. in this case the truth by saying to her that there are plenty of opportunities out there and i also made her feel pretty s***ty about her self and the way she is living as a whole. who are we as citizens to judge whatever it is a person is doing that we see doing something that doesn\'t fit our morals? does judging them from what we see make us less of a the \"perfect\" person? it kinda sucks having to know that the reality is not fair because we get mad at the things we don\'t want happening..but it does...it\'s like with racism...if you hate a particular race because you don\'t like the way they are doing what they are doing just adapt to whatever it is they are doing and leave them the hell alone...or vegeterians who think people that eat meat are savages because they are eating animals that have brains and hearts... p.s. kay sera sera...whatever will be will be...

Just wanted to add a story... Out walking to the grocery store on Main St. one day, my friend was accosted by a man asking for money to provide milk for his baby. As she was on the way to the store, she graciously offered to pay for the guy's milk at the store. Surprisingly, he said no! So, she went, grabbed a few things, and saw the man still standing there approaching everyone who walked by, with the same story. As she walked by again, she stopped and gave the guy a 1 litre of milk. As she walked away, she watched him take a swig from the carton, throw it into the parking lot, and go back to his spot. One must understand that when you give these people money, you are not providing them with necessities (there are government programs for that); more often than not, you are simply supporting their addictions. This assures they will not get off the streets or off the system.

It's very true, and for the most part unacceptable. I've been homeless myself, for a whole year, in Victoria BC and throughout the time I WAS EMPLOYED, and I NEVER ONCE panhandled. (I didn't get an apartment because you know how BC is, stuffed to the brim with old people who have a phobia of the young.) Since I was 18 they thought my hobbies consisted of drinking anything with a minor liquid content and smashing drywall in with a nine iron. Not that those things aren't fun, but they have a time and a place, and I have a brain. Whatever. My point is, is since I've been there I know what it's like and it isn't fun. It's not always as simple as "Getting a f***ing job you worthless bum." I WAS employed, full time! And I was still homeless. Granted it's a lot better in Winnipeg, though, since it's easier for young people to rent here, and rent itself is lower. (I pay $344 all included 'cept hydro and it's a decent enough place.) In Victoria, expect nothing less than $550 for the s***tiest rabbit hutch you've ever seen, nothing included. You want something decent? $800 at least. When I see these people on the street, I give them food. I never, ever, ever give them money. Food is supposedly what they're buying with said donated money, right...? So what's the bother? I never refused free food, and I still don't today. Appreciate the foooood.
