moxies restaurant - tap water vs bottled water

A rant by: celnas

my boyfriend and i was at moxies restaurant a week ago and to go along with our order we asked for a glass of water then all of a sudden our server asked us what we wanted to drink to come along with our dinner order - tap water or bottled water? since we haven't even decided what beverage we wanted yet, i guess it's just a part of the servers job over there to ask right away or something. i'm not really sure when moxies started doing this scheme for profit thing, but it never really occured to me until just a couple days ago how they are getting away with this..

tap water or bottled water?

so lets see if a customer asks for tap water that would automatically mean that moxies would be discriminating toward people who ask for tap water instead of bottled water since tap water has this stigma of being dirty and filthy. SO why is moxies giving ppl ordering their food the option of getting either tap water or bottled water KNOWING that tap water is bad for you? really good scheme for profit i must admit, but i say two thumbs down for making their customers feel really stupid by getting their servers to even ask such a stupid question.

It's not all that tough to figure out. Tap water is considered "plain" or for the common person. There are plenty of people who for whatever reason don't drink tap water and are willing to pay a premium price. Just think of wine being like water (although of course you're not likely to get free wine anywhere!) and those who want better quality will pay a premium price.

not really sure if this is true or not but someone had told me that we had fresh water in winnipeg and that the media displaying that our tap water has asbestos in it is completely bogus. would you happen to know if this is true or not? i know at the uofm they have warning signs everywhere about asbestos in the water thing, and i'm not entirely sure if this is something widespread that affects us city-wide so just wondering if this is something we should be aware of. moxies thing now... okay so they are giving us the option, but i just don't understand why they won't be upfront about it. like say if a customer was to have a dispute about the water issue, like to clarify to the waitress serving or manager the difference between tap water and bottled water (and especially if winnipeg has fresh tap water) - do you think they would actually answer the truth and say "oh yes we are just doing this so we can have more of your money.." sure its probably just a few cents but i think its just plain stupid how they are condescending some of their customers who realize what they are doing. that is why i find that their restaurant is discriminating after you ask for the tap water and they don't charge you for it. it's like if you don't choose the bottled water their thinking in their heads cheap bastards...but its just like any other restaurants to do so... i just think its pretty stupid that moxies is doing this because if the water in winnipeg is so bad or 'plain' why is it that no spokes person or some environmentalist speaker speak up about it to the public to really explain to us about how bad the water is or not to mention report any ppl dying from lead poisoining, or other diseases from drinking tap water? does moxies think that by introducing this bottled water and tap water thing to their menu will make winnipeg a better place to live if everyone chooses to drink bottled water? obviously not, there just basically in it for the money like how one of their employees got caught embezzling a month ago!

Celnas, you are so all over the map it's hard to know what your point is. If you feel embarrassed ordering tap rather than bottled water I suggest you stick to ordering your meals through a clown's mouth.
celnas says: 2006-09-14 09:15:15
haha funny..and yes my point was kind of all over the place...but my point is that a lot of corporations do that and it kinda sucks because we all buy into it..i think it\'s sad because if no one really says anything about it, prices for water may rise because it doesn\'t seem to pose any problems for anybody. soon they\'ll probably charge us for tap water in restaurants. in other places like in the eastern part of south africa their government limits them to two buckets of tap water a day and in some eastern countries they either have to pay for their tap water from a store or drink rain water. yeah i guess its just water after all and tap water is totally free here and i guess if a lot of people buy the \"better\" one then there must be a lot of rich people in winnipeg.

If someone wants to pay a few bucks for a bottle of Evian or Dasani or their water of choice, why not? Why is it any different than buying any other beverage? And if Moxies or whoever wants to start charging for tap water, oh well, I really can't fault them. I mean they are having to pay for their water, plus washing the glass, plus whatever they're not selling because you're drinking "free" water.

I'm kinda confused by the reaction to this rant to be quite honest. Everyone knows that our tap water in Winnipeg is safe, but we also know that sometimes it has a slight algae taste during the summer and stuff like that. They are in the middle of building a new water processing plant, and that will obviously make a pretty big difference in the next couple of years, but for now you can sometimes notice a difference. There are people who will pay the extra dollar to buy bottled water, and if the restaurant is giving people that choice, what's the big deal? It's no different than when you see a bottled water machine sitting next to a water fountain. Now as for charging for water in general- if a restaurant decided to charge for a glass of tap water (which I have never yet experienced), then I would probably just take my business elsewhere.

Ever noticed that a lot of restaurants no longer automatically give everyone a glass of water? Why do you think that is? That "free" glass of water isn't free. Think of all the water that they give away, not to mention all the glasses that they wash as a result. I can't say I can recall an instance where a restaurant charged for tap water, although I can think of the odd ice cream stand or similar type place that charged 10 cents for the cup. I gotta say though, whoever says water is "free" should ask to have a look at the average restaurant's water bill.

I never cease to get a kick out of people who gladly, and proudly, will pay $2 for a 500ml bottle of water, (WHICH FALLS FROM THE f***ING SKY), and then bitch about having to pay $1/L for gas.

Last time I checked the reason most places offer either tap or bottled water is because some people want to be \'greener\' so they don\'t want to use the bottle.
