They're called birds and stray cats. Quite unfortunately, seeing eye dogs and police dogs are monopolizing the animal workforce. There just aren’t enough 'real jobs' for strung-out birds and cats these days.

Don't tell me you SERIOUSLY thought that people were ripping open your garbage? DUH! It's animals that rip it open, that's why people buy these amazing contraptions called garbage cans - to keep the animals from doing it. Why don't you have one of these by now? (Oh, and just a tip: if your garbage can gets knocked over or moved down the street, it's probably from this mysterious force called WIND)

Hey man, I should probably apologize about that. I was out stumbling around last night while I was coming off a 5 day meth trip. I got hungry. I should probably take this time to tell you that KFC isn't really very good for you. You're gonna die if you keep eating that stuff man...

no it's PEOPLE. I live in the Wolsely area, and it's getting worse. At least once a month I will see some dude digging through the bins in the back lane. That's one of the reasons why we're moving further south.

Hey Duckgirl. Those "bums" going through your garbage are probably unemployed city workers who lost work when you folks stopped the summer mosquito spraying. You reap what you sew, baby!!!

If a person is going through your garbage, there must be something of value to find in there. Beer cans and bottles are worth $0.10 each, and other aluminum cans are worth $0.55/lb. When that money is free for taking, it appeals to the folks who will do a little more than you for money. If you really don't want them searching through your trash, recycle and compost everything that you can and only throw out the real trash; plastic bags, styrofoam, and greasy bits of napkin. Your garbage will be safe from all but the most primitive scavengers.

A fair comment, ScandinavianGigolo, but don't forget it's your aluminum cans that pay for the trucks to collect everyone else's cans. Sure, if everyone would do their own recycling we wouldn't need to have the city do it for us. But it's obvious most people wouldn't bother if the choice was between saving up one's recyclable material and driving out to sell it or simply tossing it in with the trash. Not to mention all the extra trips made by all those vehicles, compared with the city trucks.
ScandinavianGigolo says: 2007-01-22 20:44:49
Participation in the existing city-wide recycling system was all that I was pushing. You may have kids and sleazy men picking through your blue box instead, but the original poster was up in arms about digging through trash. Recycling is paid for by the city, with material sales paid back to the city, to be accurate. It is the "aluminum cans that pay for the trucks" essentially, but it wouldn't fall to pieces if your cans weren't in there.

Personally I think that if people are willing to root through my trash to capitalize on the things that I have thrown away then I say pick away. Dumpster diving is at least a productive activity where many people who may not be able to get gainful employment usually turn to crime. I'd rather they do something like look for cans and bottles or wash the windows of my cars at stoplights then break into my house or car. I say good for them for taking the initiative to do something positive and productive rather than turning to crime.

I'll keep from arguing garbage pickers versus thieves, but I must refer to the original post again. There are plenty of dumpster divers who do a great job of picking out the goods without littering, but the OP was concerned with the minority that let everything fly with no regard. I too am often irritated at divers that make enemies of their suppliers, that "bite the hand that feeds them," but it's merely anecdotal, really.
GreatFlatLand says: 2007-01-26 09:58:34
Agreed. I've never had anyone rip open a garbage bag to get any of my garbage. I think maybe because we recycle so all of our cans and bottles are easily accessible from the Blue Box. You see recylcing does more than just save the planet, it ensures that your garbage bags don't get ripped open. Get a blue box.

I like to dumpster dive -- and I currently have a full time job, and I don\'t do crack either. Some of the things I\'ve found dumpsters: Designer clothes a full set of pots and pans Three unopened cans of beer Hand Tools Furniture I\'ve come to be absolutely DISGUSTED about how wasteful people are. Not only I\'m disgusted about the good things being thrown out, but I\'m also disgusted by the GARBAGE being thrown into a landfill. What should we do with our trash you ask? CAPITALIZE ON IT!! Build a big ****-ing recycling plant and sell the recycled materials back to the private sector. Geez people...virtually all household garbage can be recycled/composted/reused in some way.

I agree with ScandGig.Recycle\donate your stuff.if you have bottles etc...leave them besides the garbage can.And what, you live in the Wolseley area and you dont recycle? Do the 'friends of Wolseley' know this? aren't they gonna kick you out of the club?
