Friendly Manitoba ![]() A rant by: nekochan Yay! Back in Winnipeg, and thank god! I've finally discovered why we're called "Friendly Manitoba," the rest of the country is filled with snobs! Okay, that's a bit strong, the provinces of Alberta and BC are filled with snobs. Coming home from Calgary, I showed the guy at the airport wicket my itinerary, he took one look at it and said "Wow, did you lose a bet?" Then, while going through security, the security guard looked at my ticket and told me he felt sorry for me. Gah! And this is after a few weeks of being treated like I was from a third world country. What the hell? What did we do to the Easterns to make them look down on us so much? Is there some sort of smear campaign running over there that I missed out on? I've dealt with a lot of prejudice in my life, but never because of the city I lived in. Seriously, like, what the hell was that? << Back Add a Comment Comments ( Add a Comment ) Anonymous says: 2006-04-08 04:20:09 Oh for God's sake, Winnipeg has ALWAYS been "looked down upon" by the rest of Canada (if not the rest of the world) and all of a sudden this is "news" to you? Gimmee a break! I've tried to be a Winnipeg booster and defend our city... but I've stopped doing that. This really is an awful city, mostly due to the people here. I remember one episode of 'The Simpsons' where they come to Wpg and the sign outside the city "Welcome to Winnipeg: We were born here, what's your excuse?" and at the time it made me angry (while most other 'Peggers thought it was soo hilarious). I mean c'mon; they're bashing my hometown... but it doesn't offend me anymore because it's true. And the first chance I get, I'm heading for the greener pastures of Vancouver, Edmonton, or Calgary. Those cities have their share of flaws too, but at least they have a sports scene and aren't stuck in the 1950's... JetPilot says: 2006-04-08 08:25:27 That is right. This city doe's suck. What is the first thing you hear if you don't like the city is MOVE. If it was only that easy. Most of us were born here. We are just to use to being here. I won't get into everything but what doe's this city really have to offer? Don't say this is a good place to raise a family because that is an old excuse. Help us enjoy this city a bit more by some ideas. How many times can someone go to the Forks, and to bring out of town guests there. Anonymous says: 2006-04-08 23:18:16 I agree with the above. Winnipeg does suck. The people are SUPER rude! I moved here a year ago and I can't BELIEVE how rude people are here! People don't hold open doors for each other, they don't let you into their lane in traffic (even though you've been signalling FOREVER), they hit you with their shopping cart, right in the @ss (and DON'T say sorry). You've been severely disillusioned if you think that Winnipeg is "friendly" -- in fact, I'm positive that the whole "friendly Manitoba" thing is supposed to be IRONIC. Anonymous says: 2006-04-09 12:23:29 I moved here because my family did. Not because I wanted to. I've lived here for 20 years now and I think that it's a great place. I would only consider Montreal or Victoria as places that would be comparable. i've lived in ont. and while it's a great place to visit i wouldn't want to live there. Mary Anonymous says: 2006-04-09 12:37:36 Winnipeg does not have a great reputation and why would it? Aside from the environmental issues how many people that live in Winnipeg are from somewhere else? Hardly any. I lived in Kelowna in their boom of the late 80's/early 90's and you could hardly find anyone that had lived there more than 5 years. Massive amounts of people moved there for the favorable environment. So the only reason that there would be a population boom in Winnipeg would be if the economy exploded. Well with our high leveles of socialism that will never happen here. So there is no more reasons for large numbers of people to move here. What I am saying is that if a place is attracting large numbers of people word is (or will) get out that it is a great place to be. I like it here because I live here but I certainly can't defend Winnipeg to outsiders - what's to defend?! Annie says: 2006-04-09 18:14:51 I think if you live in North America and are from Winnipeg -- people often laugh or give you a look of sympathy. Doesn't bother me. I'm tough skinned. It is their loss. At least we are famous enough that people remember the name of our less than desirable city to live in. I live here because I want to and nothing is stopping me from leaving. Every place has it's pros and cons. The one thing I do wish we had is an awesome transit system like Toronto. That would certainly cut down on the damage to the environment with less vehicles on the road. Riding the subway can become a way of life and is so cool and you don't have to worry about parking. And it is fast. On the plus side we may even get in a bit of (unwanted) exercise walking to and from the Subway from home and work. You can't always assume that the person who is rude that you spoke to is a true 'Friendly Manitoban' as we also have imports from other prov. and countries. Please do me a favour. The next time someone treats you with less respect than you feel you deserve, just suck it up and smile. Hopefully when they think about it later, if they do, they will realize that there were being a jerk. nekochan says: 2006-04-10 14:59:23 See now, all of you may have valid points, but at least you've been here and have lived here, so you're allowed to make these comments. Now, I have never lived or stayed in Flin Flon, so I would never say that someone from that town was a hick/inbred redneck, etc. Also, in Winnipeg, you can just strike up a conversation with random strangers or ask someone on the street for help and, as long as you're not some crazy freak, you'll get a friendly response. I tried to ask a few people for directions in Calgary and I might as well been speaking gibberish. Also, a lot of the people I had to work with out there had a superiority complex which really pissed me off cause my crew and I had travelled out there to HELP THEM OUT, and they treated us like trash. I've never seen that in Winnipeg. sucraman says: 2008-02-08 00:11:06 It's so true that Wpg has this rep for being nothing.i lived in Vancouver a few years ago and often the replies were of saddnes or disgust that i came from Wpg but who was i to argue i totally agreed with them but reasons brought me back and beleive me those same reasons won't keep me here forever.AMEN. sucraman says: 2008-04-23 01:03:42 Last Canada Day as i was making my way down to the forks at around 10pm.I was approaching Memorial Blvd at Portage Ave and was walking on the North side in front the the Bus Depot building. In front of the newly emptied Army and Navy store a Native Man was trying to get up from the ground he was sitting on.I could tell he was drunk as his approach of rising was not the greatest.I continued to watch this guy .Now,i was in front of the Canada building across from the Bay and i could see he was still trying to get up.He made one final attempt and managed to get to his feet but gravity pulled him backwards onto the CONCRETE,from where i was i could see his head bounce.i froze, believing that one of the many cars, that were stopped at a red light would pull over and help this NATIVE guy,but no.I then ran across this busy intersection to help this guy as no one else was even attempting anything. But along with a very help guy on a bike,we managed to call for an ambulance and get the guy taken care of.As for the Citizens of Winnipeg who witnessed this incident and those who would do the same as them, SHAME ON YOU.Some Winnipegers truly do suck!!!!! HAPPY CANADA EH? twistedmanitoba says: 2008-06-05 15:25:45 I love Winnipeg ... I have lived in many places in this country ... and as now in another country ... something always brings me home ... I may be across the Atlantic right now ... with palm trees out the window .. and fresh fruit at dirt cheap prices ... but everyday I stop to wonder if the Lilacs are in bloom yet ... and just so many things about Winnipeg ... I make it a point to be proud of where I was born and came from ... it could always be worse GordieAcorn says: 2008-06-26 09:09:42 i agree wholefartedly! unjustified 'friendly' tag. as an ex-Winnipeg who goes back every few years i find Torontonians, for example, far friendlier and interested that Winnipiglets. i've often found when trying to be 'friendly' with the locals, they look at you like a stunned mullet. yet Wpg'ers love to diss Toronto for being snobby and rude. they're just jealous because Toronto behaves like a proper city, not some hosertown hogtown. oh i suppose Wpg. friendly if one is a redneck goof. then i'm sure you'll fit right in! love and goo-goo slime...ggx Banshee says: 2009-03-18 07:26:34 Well, if you are coming back from Calgary, why are you knocking the \"Easterns\" Alberta is no prize. Bigotted, stupid people. |

Because we are the second big loser city next to Regina! We do not have anything to offer here. The media tries to make it such a Great City. What a bunch of Bulls***. I work at Polo Park Shopping Centre and people here in Winnipeg are not all that friendly or anything near that! No respect at all. Look at the driving habits. The gangs. Car thefts. House break ins. Robberies. Do not start comparing places like Toronto or Vancouver to Winnipeg their population is a lot higher than here. Everyone who lives here are moving out of here. What is keeping our population the same is the immigration coming in.........isn\'t that JUST great?????
