Ambulance

A rant by: nekochan

Can someone please explain this to me?

Today one of my co-workers had what looked like an embolism (did I spell that right?) and we called for an ambulance. When the paramedics came, they said that if we didn't have any insurance the trip would cost $50. The producer just yelled at the paramedics not to worry and to take the employee to the hospital.

Anyways... as someone who's spent a lot of time downtown, I've seen tons of homeless people get taken away by ambulances after passing out from sniffing too much glue, or some other drug-type overdose. So, my question is, who pays for their ambulance rides?

As a rule of thumb in Canada, if you are poor, all medical expenses are paid for, if you work for a living, you have to get nicked about $35/month to to be covered for medical expenses. The bottom line here is: if you don't work at all(welfare), you got all the services in the world for free, including subsidized housing, if you happen to want to work, well, you have to pay for Everything...(including medical expenses and welfare people's salary, via tax deductions) Enjoy!

My brother fell asleep in his Truck with the motor running and the vehicle was in park. Some person saw him and called an ambulance. He got a bill in the mail for $150! And all he was doing was having a little nap!

The tip of the ice berg! If you are on social assistance all medical including prescription, clothing(separate from food and rent)transportation(ie:bus)is free. So make sure you work hard as someone on welfare is depending on you to pay your taxes.

No its not. Only some prescriptions are covered, and you won\\\'t be able to afford transportation or clothes if you are on welfare. You act like it is some kind of fun ride, well obviously you have never lived on about $450 a month, and that includes rent. As for ambulance rides, someone I know on welfare was billed $300 for the ride which was deducted $50/month off of that $450 month until it was paid off. I am tired of people complaining when they don\\\'t know what they are talking about.

to anonymous - if it's not easy living on $450 a month (including rent) why don't they get a job? I think anyone who accepts free money at anytime should allow themselves to be open to criticism, depending on their circumstances. The only people I can stand to see on welfare are the very old, the very sick and single moms who truly have no other choice (although they shoudln't be allowed to have another child while still on welfare) I have to get up early in the morning 5 days a week to either start my car in the cold, scrape the ice of the windows or go out and wait for the bus and stand in the aisle all the way to my job, just for the privilege of working my butt of all day to put food on my own table and pay my own living expenses, with sometimes a bit left over to buy myself something at the end of the week. I also have the privilege of being asked for "spare change" at the end of almost every work day (I work downtown so that might explain things) while walking to the bustop or my car.

You are totally right 30smth. "they only get $450"...boohoo. id take another $450/mth anytime! To me thats alot of money when its free. Atleast the panhandlers are trying to earn an extra income. Like the above mentioned, i agree. the VERY old should be allowed social assistance (in most cases they should have saved for the future during better earning years) and single mothers with kids that are still at home (because child care costs more then a washout mom can make). But once the last kid is in grade 1, there is no reason why a mom needs to be on welfare. It's embarrassing for the kids. Plus what are you teaching your kids if you don't work for what you have? Just breeding another line of users and abusers.

$450 a month plus rent isn't so bad. You can't have three tier cable, high speed internet, a high priced cell phone, and probably not a car, but you could easily pay for food, electricity, clothes and maybe basic cable. Now, if you had to live off of $450 and that bit of money had to go towards your rent, yeah, that's a little unreasonable. But if you're on welfare for the right reasons, you shouldn't be living the high life. And just so you know 30something, my co-worker is fine. He came back to work yesterday resting and ready to start barking orders again.

Nekochan, I believe that a person on welfare only receives $450 a month, so it is rather difficult to afford rent, food, clothing, etc.
singlemom says: 2006-03-07 23:00:32
Yes, I said that it is $450/month and that includes rent. And unless you are disabled, it is one time only. So all those people everyone rants about being on welfare more than likely aren't. People just love perpetuating that myth.
nekochan says: 2006-03-08 14:03:05
Ah, sorry, I read that rant incorrectly. I have to agree than $450 a month, is barely pennies.
BigB says: 2006-03-11 02:26:57
Most ppl on welfare get more then $450/mth. If you are only getting $450 it is bcs the government realizes you are a user on the system and it is suppose to be motivations to get off your lazy ass and get a job and do something for yourself and society. The law has spoken.

I guess we as tax payers do. I understand where you are coming from but isn't inhumane to not seek medical attention for someone who clearly needs it. And I don't mean someone passed out in the street.

picture yourself with nothing because thats what you have to have to be on welfare. Now that you have nothing picture yourself trying to impress someone into hireing you Now Picture yourself haveing to also deal with some jerk at the welfare office controling your life. Don't be pissed at the welfare recipient as for every tax dollar you give to them your giving a thousand to some public servant to make sure the BUM dosn't get too much. And if you stop the welfare recipient from getting any money. You will still not save anything as the welfare worker will still be there getting thier fair share. of your tax dollars..

Now, picture yourself with terrible grammar, spelling, and puctuation...
