New Orleans ![]() A rant by: JT Watching the aftermath of the hurricane devastation in New Orleans I felt for many of the people left behind, namely the children. For the rest of the people that were "left behind" I have very little symapthy. They were warned repeatedly and begged by the mayor to leave the city. Then when the hurricane does finally hit and they are left with nothing the first thing they do is blame the government. While the civic and state governments probably should have given people without the means more transportation options, there really is no excuse to stay if you had kids. The biggest problem that has been exposed is that these people have become way too dependent on the government to support them. It's pathetic. I don't care if you had nothing in the world, if you have kids you should find a way to keep them safe. Also, for the idiots who try to put the blame on George W Bush, you should do some homework. USA stands for United States of America. There are 50 individual states and they are way more independent than our provinces. Even criminal laws and punishment changes from state to state. The federal government is not supposed to be involved for at least 48 hours and isn't at all unless help is requested. The blame should be shared by local governments and the idiots who thought they could take on the hurricane. The amazing thing is that the only one to stand up and take responsibility is Bush, and he's the least responsible. Says a lot about his character. << Back Add a Comment Comments ( Add a Comment ) BalthazaarRamrod says: 2005-10-26 10:51:20 Wow JT, your point sucks. That complete tard Bush sat on his ass for an extra day. He hasn't done anything pro-active in his entire time as president. Oh, except for that abysmall faliure called the "global war on terror." Furthermore, How is Louisiana supposed to deal with a storm of this magnitude when the whole f---ing state is messed an they're one of the 5 poorest states in the Union? Your Me Me ME! attitude is a perfect example of what is holding their country down. Thanks for demonstrating that to everyone. Anonymous says: 2005-10-27 23:57:50 Oh my God!!!! Let me see if I can remain calm enough to respond. People were warned in New Orleans...the people that were left behind were the working poor...which are MANY..and they include all colors although I know that most of the footage that was shown were predominatly of Afican Americans. Then you have the Elderly, children, and those that were stranded there by no fault of their own i.e. business...travelers...there were those that tried to get out and they closed the airport or flights had filled up before they were able to get out. The final group would be the crazies...the addicts...and the stubborn. Some people were scared to leave all that they had worked for behind. No matter what group you are in it doesn't change the situation. The Bush Administration, the State Officials in Louisiana, and the city government in New Orleans all dropped different balls at different times. It is amazing how the American government can get aid within 12 hours to the victims of a Tsunami but it takes 6 days to get help to victims in their own country. I was sitting here watching CNN and I saw people die before my eyes. I saw an elderly white woman in a wheelchair die sitting in the sun with no water, no medical attention, no one to help her....just a couple of children that had enough compassion to cover her up with a sheet and push her lifeless body into a corner where I saw her sit report after report after report from the Convention Center. I saw a four month old die from not having any milk or water. This was on the television for all the world to see. I guess you don't know what it is like to work week after week and barely scrape by. Have no car and walk or take the bus to work. You have 2 kids to feed and you don't even have enough money to pay the rent. You hear that a bad hurricane is coming. You have no way to get out and there is no transportation out of the city. The flooding in New Orleans didn't even start until almost one full day after the hurricane when the levee's broke in Lake Ponchetrain. So then what do you do. The State and the city called your hero President Bush and told him that if the Levee broke there were thousands of people who couldn't get out and they didn't have the resources to handle a Hurricane of that magnitude. This was 38 hours before the Hurricane even hit. What happened?!?!?!?! No troops were called. The State Guard and National Guard that would normally handle events like this were all over in Iraq. Oh and by the way just 6 months ago George Bush cut 60 % of the funding for critical updates that were needed to fix some major problems in the Levee system in New Orleans. He did so to help fund the War. He admitted that he did cut the budget when the subject was brought up in a campaign rally with his constituents in New Orleans. He told the American public that with the new elections happenening in Iraq that our soldiers would be home soon and the likleyhood of a major hurricane hitting New Orleans was not likley. However, just before 9/11 there was a summit held by Congress dicussing the three most likley disasters that the U.S. could face. Number one was an attack on a major skyscraper in New York City. Number two was an earthquake in California more than 7.5 on the Richter scale that could cause the state to fall off into the ocean and become an island. Number three was a hurricane that would hit the New Orleans soup bowl. He knew all along it was a possibility and so did the rest of the country. He should have taken some responsibility. I think the one who needs to study a bit more is you JT oh and grab a heart on the way out the door buddy. Natural Disasters are a time when you need to lean on your Government....kind of like Halifax. Oh I know your going to say that the people in that disaster had no idea it was coming. How would you feel if you knew that Hurricane was coming and you also knew that you didn't have a car to get out or you didn't have the choice to leave. I guess everyone should be like you and turn a blind eye of judgement...why??? The coward way out of a horrible tragedy. DisgruntledUSCitizen says: 2005-10-28 00:00:18 Oh my God!!!! We might have gotten real lucky. 30something says: 2005-11-21 00:59:34 yeah that's not fair. The people who were left were for the most part the poor who couldn't afford to get out no matter how much they wanted to. Do a bit more research before you throw your blame around. Most people with any amount of common sense/education/compassion will not see your point of view.
