This city is great

A rant by: WinterSix

Many people say Winnipeg isn't rated very highly on the entertainment scale. We don't have an NHL team, bars arent as good as some big cities, blah, blah, list goes on.

Well for those who are looking for some entertainment there is a venue that has been around for years but has yet to be discovered by most of the general public.

Now, if you're from Winnipeg, you're probably thinking, how much is this venue? Don't be upset when i tell you that the fee ranges. You see sometimes it is free, sometimes it may cost you your pocket change, sometimes your jacket, sometimes your health, but don't worry, this venue is worth it.

The venue is located at Portage & Donald, right in front of the MTS centre. You can sit there all day and expect to see:

1) Bum Fights
You never know when you're there, u might just get lucky seeing two guys go at it over who was there first, who has rights to beg at that post. They don't last too long, but the funny part aint the wrestling, it's the lingo used in the argument leading up to the fight. Here you'll hear swear words used in everycontext available, and even new words that you can't find in the dictionary like mmnnnyyyaaah (it's tough to pronounce, it involves drool falling from the side of your mouth with your tongue hanging out).

2) Crazy People
You're gauranteed a crazy person at least once every hour. People who flip out over a person using the sidewalk to bike, people who just love to walk around rocking out to their earphones(which you know arent plugged into anything), and of course once in a while you will get to see wild things like two people who smell very much like the glue u used to build model airplanes, rolling across portage ave in a race. Here too, listen for thw work

3) Visual Appeal
For the guys, you get your visual fix from the attractive waitresses that are on their way to work at moxies.

4) Suit watching
If the crazy people arent enough for you, just watch the groups of business men walking on their way to moxies to try to pick up a waitress. These men are easy to spot, usually theres a group of three, one of them talking very loudly, and the other two anxiously waiting for their turn to speak not listening to a word that the one is saying.

5) Watching people run for their bus.
Everyone who's ridden transit has been there before, it sucks, but is it ever funny watching someone else running for their bus, only to get there just as it drives off. Top it off with a slip on some ice and you've got something to send to america's funniest.

This list is getting too long, I would add to it but i'm sure if you made it this far in my rant I don't need to go on because you have alot more to add. Feel free to comment on all of the fun things to watch downtown. vvv

You kniow it is not that hard to point out the crappy things about winnipeg but this is where I have had many good times. As sad as it may be most of my memories are off here and I have always felt comfortable here. It is not to pretentious but is nice in areas just like any city. make the best of where ever you live and if you can not then you will be happy no where.

There is a degree of Truth to what you say. That said I think Winnipeg has a serious identity issue. It's got a dual nature... Big city/Chicago of the north and hick town. I also think people here are as pretentous as anywhere else.

That suit watching comment was bang on. Really made me laugh because believe it or not, im that loud guy that no one is listening to. As for truths comments, you have a good point. Winnipeg does have some things to offer and regardless of what we dont have it is home to a lot of people. I'm working out of Calgary right now and I was amazed what a little snow did to the drivers here. I was driving my respectable 120km/hr while everyone else had slowed to 70kms bcs of a little snow. To me that's rediculous. Winnipeggers maintain their speeds all the way into the ditch!
