Some things to do in Peg City

A rant by: Vostok

Everyone in peg city has asked themselves "what is there to do in this city?" So I took the opportunity to compile a list of things that people can do here in the good ol' river city

1. Go to TYC or other trendy night spots and guzz down your choice in the following beer-flavored water: MGD, Corona and Coor's. All at the bargain price of $4.50 a bottle!! While doing this you can watch drunken college klds act like they're the hottest s***, while listening to non-stop cheesy hot 103 music all night! All this for the price of five dollars at the door (plus 40 dollars for the cab fare home)

2. Sick of TYC? Well head down to Alive or the Palomino club where you can hear all the music they played at your cousin Billy Bob's wedding social AND the same songs that you hear 15,000 drunks at a bomber game screaming the lyrics to. After all watching monster truck rallies on TV does get old after awhile

3. Speaking of Bomber games, why not go and park your ass on a cold steel bench and indulge in the skanky-cheerleader, bad-arena-rock, sub-par-football induced action? Can't go wrong with that.

4. And how can you forget the Forks? With all the johnston terminal filled with stores that sell all the junky dollar-store merchandise one could ask for, a few worthwhile events per season, and a market that's usually cluttered up with junk, and an eyesore gravel parking lot over by the CanWest park, who could ask for more?

5. Or maybe you just simply want to take a walk down one of Winnipeg's fine streets. To add excitement to this, you can always take a counter to mark the amount of times some drunk or Gangster-wannabe gives you attitude or makes a smart-ass comment. On a second thought, maybe you should take two counters. You're going to need 'em

6. Or maybe shopping is your thing. If so, head down to Polo Park where you can find everything from Women's clothing to....women's clothing. Oh wait. There's also Spencer's where you can pick up a Playboy T-shirt, some shoddy old South Park merchandise or the same Scarface figurine that they've been hocking for five years.

Now get out there and go do something.

Items 1 through 5 are just nit picky gripes. If I were writing this I would ask what am I doing to make any of this any better. Clubs are by far a last resort when looking for real entertainment. Item #6 however is true. Is there a place in Winnipeg that a guy can go to get decent clothes. Not all of us have our wives shop for us and some of us even want to look good.

To make it better we could bulldoze our crappy trendy bars, put up something that doesn\'t play cheesy top-40 music and white trash music, we could have something beyond the same shoddy trinket stores at the forks (don\'t retailers have any stinkin ORIGINALITY these days?) and maybe some MORE EVENTS that will DRAW A CROWD. Then we could throw all the gangsta-wannabes in a labor camp and make them work s*** jobs for 10 hours a day for the next 25 years of their lives. As far as the Bombers are concerned; how did that phrase go? Was it Go Jets Go...Take the Bombers with you? Another suggestion would be for business owners and politicians to start taking cues from THRIVING cities that are ATTRACTING people

As far as looking for a place for guys to get decent clothes are concerned, I think you're S.O.L. unless "metrosexual" or "fraternity initiate" are your styles. And another thing about shopping, Once again....Retailers can sell other things besides the SAME CLOTHING AND USELESS TRINKETS THAT A MILLION OTHER STORES ARE SELLING. Go to any other city and you WILL find variety.

Trendy bars who needs them, would rather go to local bar or even the legion and play cards with the vets. As for the Bombers everyone is down on them but remember we gave those banjo players from the west a damned good game, with a back up QB even. Clothes well all I can say is that being a big man I have Two good shops for dressing up and even a couple for work clothes. so QUIT BITCHING about it and do something

I'm going to bitch and whine and piss and moan until there's something better to do than sit in crappy ridiculously overpriced watering holes

I totally feel this rant. I was actually of the exact same frame of mind about 5-6 months ago, I tried going to a variety of "nightclubs" across the city and found there were three types of bars here in the city. 1-overpriced and pretentious, usually very crowded for some reason 2-overpriced and full of homeless people, drug abusers, and murderers. Extremely entertaining, and full of excitement. I heartily recommend picking up the chick with the least amount of teeth... she'll show you a good time. Only recommended once you've imbided at least triple the legal limit. 3-overpriced, filled with the same clientele and music from 40 years ago when it might have been a happening place. Usually large, with four people at the VLTs, and usually two depressed-looking seniors drinking alone. On the upside, you can always find a seat. I recommend picking up the chick there with the least amount of teeth... So, long story short, I gave up on the bar scene here, and the shopping has always sucked ass. So, instead, I did what an increasing number of Winnipeggers are doing. I developed a raging crack addiction, and spend most of my spare time smoking it under the underpass where I currently reside. On the upside, living under the underpass, or down by the river in a van, there's not a whole lot of concern for male fashion!

Have you ever gone down behind the Royal Conservatory building? It's like a hidden city there. If you're not sure where I'm talking about, if you're driving South on Main street, turn right onto or near Bannatyne. Or better yet, go walking down there in the summer. There's the Glass Onion restaurant, the Fyxx café, and many other unique shops, places to eat, and places to explore.
