Gimmie a reason to stay here, and ill turn right back around

A rant by: Mastafella

I have always been one for experiencing new things, but what can you do in a city so deprived of excitement. Unless you find a trip on the Mcphillips street train simulator to be a wild night out, what can I do on any given night in the city for a real good time? Let’s see we have Movies, Casino, Arcades "I have no idea where there are any good arcades in the city but never the less", Clubs, late night dinning, and our wonderful theatre district. Ok I have been doing these things for ever and it’s getting totally played out. Recently I found out that the city has been hiding a few good places I want your feedback on dinning, entertainment and all around great places to hang out. I mean I have my list of regular places to check out for the most fun, but as these new places pop up it’s hard to know what is actually out there. I’m going to start by giving a few of my favourite places to spend my hard earned cash where I actually feel like I got my moneys worth. Here are my top choices for these categories:

Best Breakfast goes to the Eye Opener on Main Street, Everything at this joint is well worth it so try it out and you won’t be sorry.

Best Burger: Nice little place on Henderson Hyw called Sonya's Family Restaurant, 2 Bacon Cheeseburgers for $5.00 and will they ever hit the spot.

Best rush under 50 bucks: Speedworld Go Karting, and trust me the girls that run the joint are not only fast but hot too. St. Matthews and Berry Road.

Best Whore tour: Check out Sargent and Ellice on any given night, don't forget the side streets for extra points.

By now I look like a big fat pervert so I guess I don’t have to put my picture up, anyways I would love to hear what is out there that I haven’t checked out and if this city has a chance of ever being a place where young people can go home and say, "damn this city is wild"

Give me your places and let’s see if this place is worth another shot.

Your write up was what a "big fat pervert" like myself has needed. My advice to you, see "music in winnipeg", "honk if you love speed bumps", and "first annual winnipeg awards show" articles. There is lots to do and see around here. Provided Jazz, waking up the neighbours while getting airborne in your car, and hitting on elmhood hoes and thier pimps is all up your alley... My solution to boredom is cleaning all my gun collection, laying them all out on the coffee table (known as "show and tell" with my 8mth old twins who i dont think have the dexterity to pull the trigger yet, although they are getting close!!) and pop in Carletos Way, Godfather, ScarFace, etc. Then i walk around my house talking like a sweaty uneducated (they all are) italian. You have to get into character to really enjoy it. So smack your wife a little and then give her some yao. Don't forget to call her a lousy 2bit... When the paperboy shows up to collect for the paper, tell him u "dont want no stinkin paper" and bust a cap in his ass! Also, playing grease ball gives you all kinds of new perks. Such as; smacking your sister-in-law's 18yr old ass, stealing the neighbours paper and wife, never work but rather make some very stupid business decisions. But atleast you do them while on the 'yao', and of course smoke a cigar at all times. Now that this has all been said, I think ill mention all the worst places to go just to save you the trouble of wasting your time. Worst breakfast: Union Gospel Mission, Worst burger: Soy burger in the gaybo sector of downtown winnipeg. They charge you $6 for a leaf and bun and call it a burger. Worst rush for under $50: Finding out the chick you picked up at the bar isnt a chick. Worst whore tour: Transcona, yes it's free but they will follow you around for a month like a attention starved puppy.

Best breakfast: the sunday brunch at the royal crown in fort gary place. Expensive, but the best food you'll ever have! Good less expensive breakfast: Pancake House. Been trying everything on the menu. Have yet to find something I don't like. Best Burger: Bison burger from Freehouse. Things to do in the city while the weather's warm: head down to a city park with your buddies and play soccer or volleyball. Or wait till dark and play hide n' go seek in either Kildonan Park or Assiniboine. Or grab a glowing freesbie for ultimate in the dark, just watch out for trees! Speaking of Assinaboine, check out the leo whatever his name is garden after the sun sets. Nothing's scarier than naked pre-pubscent girls who don't have pupils. Go hang out around Corydon, grab dinner, walk around and check out the sights, go for candy at Sugar Mountain or Gelati at one of the faboulous gelati places then stop in at a bar or play a few rounds of pool. Go to the drive-in, and make sure you grab a pizza from slices and a slurpee first. Go play pool or check out a bowling lane. The corn maze is always a blast, and even more fun in the dark. Have a bonfire at Harbour View park. If you can find it, there's a nice little bonfire pit in a park behind Pembina, just turn east at McGillvary (don't turn onto McGillvary, it's the other street). Walk along the path at the forks. Or walk through the ruins in St.Norbert. And don't forget about Paint Ball! too bad Dark Zone is gone... bastards. Things to do when it's cold out: Go check out Magicland arcade on portage ave. You pay poer hour, not per game, and they have a nice selection. Or hang out at the arcade in either silver city or cinema city. Go to a 24hr staples copy centre and try and photocopy body parts. Check out Rumor's comedy club. Go to a poetry reading or poetry slam. Skate along the river (when it's safe). And that's all I can think of right now... if you need more ideas, check out uptown magazine, always lots of ideas there.

This is some of the most disturbing sh*t I've ever heard. Bowling and a walk in the park make Winnipeg great... apparently that's true, if you copy those ideas from the brochure from the Deer Lodge Centre. Fun is meeting on a patio after work with no fear of contracting West Nile. Great cities have real freeways, tall buildings in their downtown, rapid transit, and people who actually want to move there. Darkzone and burger joints are great - if our main competition in the world is Brandon. We praise the basic amenities that all other cities have as well - only we think that they're cat's ass! There's life beyond Grand Forks, people. Quit settling for the status quo.

Winnipeg sucks ass. This is why i moved to Niverville. It's no better, but atleast we can all admitt it. I don't understand why anyone would move to Manitoba. The only reason people stay here is for family. Roads suck, people suck (thats right. you especially), polititians suck, night life sucks. Take that.
BigB says: 2005-08-31 17:48:48
Sure Niverville is a great town provided you dont live near the lagoon or the feedmill plant. So that brings you down to what 2 streets left in the town? And i'm sure there are lots of fun things to do out there like go to the chicken chef, the chinesse restaurant that leaves you with a rash or maybe hang out with the 15 year old that pumps your gas at the coop. Thanks for coming out buddy. But you seem to have chosen the ultimate loser town to become a part of. I'd rather live in Transcona then the dump you call home. Atleast they have good lookin hussies that are easy and you dont have to drive to st adolph to quinch your thirst. The law has spoken.

Oh please. I've lived in Toronto for a year, and once you get past all the cool touristie things, it's like Winnipeg. Only much more expensive. You wanna know what I did when I was in Toronto? Went to karaoke bars and sat on the patio and drank with me friends. I can do that just as well in Winnipeg. And at least our dance clubs are open 6 days a week. In TO, they're only open for the weekend, and you're lucky if cover is $5. Granted, the malls are better, and there's more plays and stuff, but no student has the money for stuff like that. And while the transit system was better, I'd prefer to spend $60 on a monthly bus pass then $100+

A fun life in Winnipeg is achievable simply by keeping oneself steadily involved in hobbies and interests. I don't rely on malls, bars, or casinos to keep me having fun in life.

I would just like to say to BigB one thing. Lay off your cracks about Transcona unless you have lived here all your life and then you can say whatever you want because then it would be simply 'your opinion'. But if you are from some other area of Wpg. well then please keep your comments to yourself.

I agree with annie! there r so many people in this city that bash transcona, but no one knows how great it actually is until u live there.
JT says: 2006-01-12 13:06:15
I live in Transcona too and I'd have to say every Transcona joke I've heard isn't funny at all. It's not funny because it's not a joke. My neighbour on one side works on his 84 Camaro every day, the other side has a 16 year old coke dealer. I have a baby's mama that I'm not with and my best times usually go down at the Spike. Truthfully Transcona is what it is, it's just that some of us don't mind being white trash. Peace out.
angrywpg says: 2006-01-16 13:47:50
lets see, u want us to add to your list, there arent too many places to go in this city, but a hobby that has entertained the downtown community for years is sniffing glue. maybe give that a try.

And if BC is such a garden of eden why do they leave it.Personaly I think winnipeg is a kind of black hole. That somehow sucks in the entire planet. Once you enter you can never truly leave...

Believe it or not, I moved here from Manhattan. As in New York, New York. I was dragged here kicking and screaming, but my wife\'s family had health issues that had to be taken care of. I\'ve been here four years. Sure this town has a myriad of problems. But I\'ve never had a more caring, intelligent and funny bunch of friends (that I would take a bullet for) than my pals in Winnipeg. I have to disagree that there is nothing to do here. If you truly believe that, you\'re just lazy. Movies? Try the Globe or Cinemateque. Theatre? Good stuff at MTC, and local theatre companies. Spend an afternoon at WAG, especially during the Cannes Lions, which is the screening of the best commercials from around the world. Great Fun. Which brings me to your local music scene. Have you seen The Mad Young Darlings, The Nods, Killdare, Lucid, Alverstone, Forgetful Jones and a plethora of other phenomenal local talent? Have you eaten at Billabong, Fude, Noir, Carlos and Murphy\'s and dozens of other good local places not run by corporations? Do you go out? Pal...trust me...if you seek it out, this town is not boring! The problem is that you are. Heal thyself, physician. PS:You people whine a lot about boredom. Does it take a New Yorker to tell you what to do in your own town? Enjoy and embrace. If not, move. I believe you have a bus station and an airport.

It seems Winnipeg doesn't need places to go because most people are involved with their families all the time. The biggest thing to do in Winnipeg is a cousin's wedding. There's always a cousin's wedding. Or helping your cousin or brother or father or father-in-law put up a new garage or something. That's why everything's closing. I personally like late-night stuff. 24 Hour Perkins? Nope, that's closed now. 24 Hour Sals? Credit cards only, and the atmosphere is old men and shift workers, not the hot chicks from the bar Perkins had. Speaking of bars, the Collective/Die Maschine? Nope, closed. Buffalo Bills or Mardi Gras? Nope, closed. They're now lousy stinking Tavern Uniteds, with no dance floor in sight. Which means Silverados now has the longest lineups known to mankind. The Albert? Music status in question after Jan. 1. Venues like the Garrick, Park Theatre, or WECC? Bands at those places end very early, so if you're looking for the headline act to come on stage before 1:00 a.m. and finish just before 2:00 a.m. because bars close at 2:00 a.m., you're going to be sadly disappointed when you go there and find out the show is over. Even the Subway at River & Osborne closes now and isn't open 24 hours anymore, if you can even get to it, with all the lousy fencing around that building preventing you from getting anywhere now. Where is all the overnight stuff to do? Where has it gone? At least The Zoo still rocks, and at least we still have 7-11.

You don't sound like you have the maturity and class to know WHAT to look for in Winnipeg. I just hope the likes of you just stay away from me. P.S. Too bad your parents were too stupid/lazy/low class to teach you how to respect women. Whores? No wonder you are bored and lonely, boy.

I really think that we should develope our city into a kinda Middle East type city. For you \"bored\" ones out there, we could have the bar that goes boom! Any given night, one bar in town gets blown up! You won\'t know which one, but you\'ll keep going out night after night hoping it ain\'t the one you\'re at! During the day we could have open markets, and like the bars, you\'ll never know when some wierdo will walk up and press the little red button! But you could go every day, cause people gotta eat! Or my personal fave, the roadside bomb! It could be big or small, but wouldn\'t it be exciting driving to and from work everyday, not knowing which road it\'s planted in? Be thankful for what you people got! Better yet, if you can make it better, do it and stop whining! Bunch of babies! Oh crap, gotta go! I broke a nail! And there\'s just no really good place to go for nails anymore in this rotting city, waaahhhh!
