"We got Dick..."

A rant by: BigB

Let's talk about how much FREQ 107 is pissing me off. For starters, They really don't have a vision for their radio station. They don't know where they are going or what they are doing. They started out as a christian radio station, but when they didn't get the ratings they hoped for they sold out. Way to follow the buck. They had one thing going for them, they were the only christian rock music station in winnipeg. Now they are like every other station. You can hear everything from metallica to celine dion. What is the point of that? I listened to their old format more then this one. Why would i want to listen to a station where every 4th song is a good one. Might as well just put on the cd player where i trust the dj's judgement.

But that isn't the momentum to my complaint. It's these damn billboards all over the city. "We got Dick...Rivers". Isn't Dick Rivers the coke head that got canned from Power 97? "Get your nightly dick?" The guy was a moron back then and he's a moron now. So how does this help FREQ's image? Is there really something to be proud about here? They fired an unemployed bum thats been living in his mom's basement for the last 3 years. Drinking himself to sleep, watching low budget porn and snorting the coke dust out of the couch cushions. And then FREQ is bragging "we got dick!" I think Dick Rivers is the same guy i hired for the day to scrub out my septic tank. I wonder why he insisted on paying cash.

And then back to FREQ's lack of focus. I was leaving Pearl Jam and hey handed me a FREQ cd, "Rock the nation" or something like that. I popped it in for the drive home and my lady friend chucked it out the window. I recognized one song of the whole disc. I don't know if that is their form of "outreach" but they would probably do better handing out beer and hotdogs. My soul is saved, but i'd still like the freebies that are worthwhile.

The law has spoken.

thanks BigB... I listen to Freq, but in hopes that maybe they'll turn around and return to how they started. It doesn't look good. They still have some good djs, like Rob Nash... but when they outdo the secular stations in terms of sketchiness, I wonder if I'm wasting my time listening and hoping they'll turn it around... are they even in compliance with their original licence anymore??

If Freq had not been trumpeted for so long as a ministry, a way to promote Christianity through Christian music, then I would not be quite as upset as I am. After all, I can't expect the whole world to follow the same set of standards I follow- or to even recognize the same moral law. However, Freq did start off as a ministry, and even long after it stopped identifying itself as a Christian radio station, the owner would go from person to person talking about the ministry he was doing. Freq now is much worse than just a regular everyday radio station that has a pervert for a dj (and I only say that due to some sexually explicit talk I once heard on a past radio station that was aimed towards a young woman who had won a prize). Now it is a station that tells dirty jokes, playes many the beer commercial, and still mixes in the occasional Christian song just to confuse people really well. If Freq 107 wants to be a standard shock rock station, then just do it- but don't drag Christian music, and ultimately God into the mix.

"To broadcast musically oriented programming in a style that focuses on love and acceptance while promoting a search for Truth." talk about a vague mission statement. Which "search for truth" are they promoting anyways? I went onto their website and i was able to check my winning lottery tickets. Is that the truth? Gambling? How about blunts and OE's too? Really, the more i dig the more pathetic this sell out station is. Clearly the days are numbered for this station, The key to success is knowing what you want and going for it. Walking around blind taking handouts where you can get it and selling out for the price of a coffee is the key to failure. So keep promoting NIN, Gambling and teenage pregnancy. Way to represent christianity, Brude vipers!!

I knew they were done for when they came out with the billboard "What the F***?" Which later became, "What the Freq?" At that point I realized that they were the little kid everyone grew up with that would do stupid things to get everyone else to like them. The unfortunate kid that would pretend to be someone he/she was not and didn't realize that everyone was laughing at them and not with them.

Dick Rivers is a dick. A lot of people at work have been talking about how they have not listened to 107.1 since he was hired on. I personally used to like to listen to 107. They usually play some good music. But listening to an idiot talk about nightly dick and suck has no interest to me. 107 sold out.

What are you guys talking about? Without FREQ we wouldn't have any radio station to promote local indipendant artists. They'r an awesome radio station! Who cares if they arent playing the music their supposed to, at least they play good music! Besides, it's FREQ 107 "winnipegs new rock alternative" not "Winnipegs Boring Music that we have to play"

BigB: Do you play music(Drums) and have long hair?

W/Op, what are you trying to say? Was that a weak attempt at calling me a hippie? You ill humour is hurting all our readers. Please stop. To the previous poster, you have a good point about the local music. But there are no other stations that did play Crock (Christian rock) and Crap (Christian rap), so by saying they are “special” because they promote something no one else does, is a poor statement. And 107’s original slogan wasn’t “Winnipeg’s newest rock alternative” Lil, do you remember what it was? BTW, who said that Christian music is “boring”? My opinion is that all local music is crap. Garage bands suck no matter where they come from. And if you are going to start telling me that Winnipeg has brought out quality musicians your lacking taste. Chantal Kreviazuk, Burton Cummings, Guns 4 Hire, The Guess Who and The Crash Test Dummies are the most embarrassing reason’s to be a Winnipegger. Sorry Krevco and friends. I’d like to see an all American radio station in Canada. Now that’s worth listening to. This way we wouldn’t have to listen to Choclair, Celine Dion, and Avril Lavigne. The Law about stations having to play Canadian music is a joke. I propose a new law where Canadian stations have to play music that involves talent. The more they increase content quality the more listeners will develop better taste in music. This will in the long run educate listeners and make a more sophisticated nation. I must go now and play my bongos.

The original slogan was Freq 107- Alive n' Kickin' Here's an interesting site to check out: http://www.christianradio.ca/station/cfeq/ Note the mission statement; it is similar to how it is now, but there was more to it originally. Furthermore, the terms of the license are revealing. For instance, does Freq play 95% 'non-classic religious' music? It sure doesn't sound like it. One more site to check out, and this one is a little more 'official': http://www.crtc.gc.ca/archive/ENG/Decisions/2002/db2002-226.htm

I stay as far away from the radio as I can. So sick of being bombarded with advertising. Even the music these days is marketing. I'm gonna get an FM transmitter for my car.
