Winter is great ![]() A rant by: hook Thank you winter. Not much people ever talk about the good things about winter driving in winnipeg. Sure it may be slippery, but if you haven't noticed, there is a whole lot less orange these days. Nothing worse than driving during rush hour and seeing miles of red break lights followed by some lazy person leaning on a "slow down" construction sign. If it wasn't for the slow drivers in winter i would say winter driving is way better than summer. Just wait, especially with all of the hot/cold we've had this winter, our summer is going to be the worst summer ever for construction. Not only that, as was mentioned in a previous post months ago, our city is not smart enough to do construction work at night like most cities to help aleviate traffic congestion. << Back Add a Comment Comments ( Add a Comment ) WinterSix says: 2006-01-17 16:43:56 BigB is right, I don't think the Winnipeg public has enough working cars, or at least cars worth mentioning to back up more than a mile. Maybe if they took all of the cop cars off portage on a sunday night and contributed to the line it would add 10 - 15 miles though. 30something says: 2006-01-19 17:48:08 The only good thing I can think of about winter is that as a woman, you are dressed up in a heavy coat and usually pants and boots in the summer so it cuts down on the rude comments and oglers that occasionally happen when youre wearing shorts and sandles and a tank top on really hot summer days. (not that it happens to me much anymore due to my advancing age, but still when it happens I want to curl up and hide myself and it's not fair) BigB says: 2006-02-03 16:02:01 mom, I think you would be flattered if guys whistled at you still. But I think the real reason you like this weather is that you dont have to shave your arms, legs and mustache when you have a parka, pants and a balclava on... nekochan says: 2006-02-04 17:48:45 The snow hasn't even completely melted yet and already there's way too many overly dangerous pot holes springing up everywhere. I think it should stay winter all year round, that way there would never been any construction, the pot holes would stay filled (and production crews wouldn't have to waste our time filling them in with gravel for overly spoiled has-been WB actors who can't even walk a few minutes...grrr) and then woman would never have to shave again! Banzai! paydirtgirl says: 2006-02-18 04:40:05 I think winter driving offers us Winnipeggers a chance to show our good spirit. A few years ago I was driving late at night on Corydon and there was a car stuck in a drift. My boyfriend and I pulled over and before we even got to the car, two other vehicles had stopped to help. It was bitterly cold, but we got that person unstuck in seconds and they weren't left to tackle both their immovable car and their subsequently immovable digits. I'm not a big fan of snow and ice and freezing temperatures, but I am grateful for intermittent glimpses of hope for humanity. |

You are right. Construction is going to be really busy this summer (hopefully). The roads have taken an incredible beating over this unpredictable winter. But this nonsense about seeing red lights of cars backed up for miles is crazy talk. I don't think Winnipeg has ever seen a traffic jam farther then 1/2 a mile EVER.
