Road Repairs

A rant by: Anonymous

Hey Y'all,

Is there a reason it takes 2 weeks to repave one lane?
Why can't they run the scraper, cleaner, and paver right behind one another, and not leave an empty lane to collect rainwater for 10 days? Pembina Hwy is getting UGLY, not to mention Main St. And Henderson which they just finished? Henderson now has a bump between the southbound curb lane and centre lane where they just resurfaced!!!
Let me guess, next summer they fix the utilities under the resurfacings?

I go northeast - southwest every day, and every day I need to either wait for 2 or 3 lane closures to merge.

I agree with some of your point. But, I'd also like to say, kudos to the crew out there. There are so many streets right now, getting done simultaneously. Great to see, yes it's a hinderance for driving, but I'm tired of paying for repairs on my car because of nasty speed bumps.

i agree that its good that they are finally fixing the streets, but why oh why they cant start earlier in the morning everyday i drive by from the end of main till middle of pembina and no one is working till 9 am, why cant they have 2 shifts and finish the whole thing way faster and painless to the drivers

The reason they don't scrape and place all in one day is that they have to pass inspections. These are jobs that are tendered out to contractors in most cases. You don't want them cutting corners. And for the work that city employees do i would prefer those hacks be kept accountable for their lazy actions.

To have 2 shifts would up the cost. No one will pay for it. (and all taxpayers would, as usual, yell). However, sometimes you do see them working at odd times, when there is less traffic.

Most of the city streets are concrete with an asphalt cap. When the roads are resurfaced the concrete is repaired at the joints to eliminate all the "cracks" and "bumps". The concrete work is what takes time because it has to be hammered out, cleaned up, doweled in and then poured. The reason they don't start earlier is that they're not allowed to due to the noise bylaws. 7am is the earliest they can start even though they're usually there by 6am. As far as shift work, it is done with a lot of paving. Pembina Hwy was largely paved at night and the city waives the noise bylaws for these particular jobs. It didn't work on Henderson Hwy because of all the homes along that stretch. Most contractors are not set up to work night shifts though because there isn't enough work that the city deems it necessary. The city also doesn't budget more projects like this because contractors would submit much higher bids to cover overtime pay and night work premiums.

I'm definitely not a road-repair expert, but it's got to be obvious that the present system of road construction/repair is NOT working! I see a lot of cement roads - without an asphalt top layer - and it is almost without exception that it's the seams that are the problem. Water gets in there and does its magic and before long a pothole is formed. More often than not an asphalt patch is applied which may or may not last a whole year.

The joints in concrete roads are sealed after they have been cut. They are not maintained as often as they should be but if they were our civil employees wouldn't be able to stop for naps during the day. The biggest problem is that our climate beats the hell out of the roads all winter and we dont have the population base to repair them all. One solution my aboriginal friends have come up with is to buy old crown vics, grand marquis, or pick up trucks and beat the hell out of em.

You probably wouldn\'t like if you had to re-arrange your life to work a second shift. Construction workers are usually on their 3rd or 4th hour of work before you are even out of your bed. Give em a break.
