Those Who Complain about Sals on the Bridge ![]() A rant by: jammin The other night me and a buddy took a walk from the Forks over the Red River via the walking bridge. (please don't ask me how to pronounce it or even spell it). It was a relatively brisk fall evening, and I expected to see very little in terms of activity. However, what I found once I reached Sals on the Bridge was families with young kids coming out of a decently full restaurant. This takes me back to all the whining and complaining the day that it was announced that Salisbury House would take over the still vacant building. People wanted to see a fancy bistro of some sort built there, and used words like "tacky" to describe Sals. However, what we have seen is a huge success, and the reason is that Winnipeg is a Sals city. What do I mean by this? I mean that we are a city that is generally composed of hard working blue collar people who enjoy taking their kids out for a burger and fries. Yes, we have our share of upper middle class, and even upper class citizens, but even they generally tend to be fairly down to earth people who.. well.. enjoy taking their kids out for a burger and fries. My point to all those who complain about Sals on the Bridge is this; it's time we as Winnipegers stop trying to be something we are not and start celebrating what we are. We have a lot going for our city, including incredible diversity and a lot of natural beauty; but what ultimately makes Winnipeg what it is is the little restaurant with the red sign that serves up a nice greasy burger. << Back Add a Comment Comments ( Add a Comment ) BigB says: 2005-10-10 11:56:51 Great article. I can't say I agree with any of it. But you bring a good point to the table. To the first reply. Your an idiot. Sal's is Winnipeg?!?! Yes thats right people, Winnipeg is about a low end grungy restauruant. So line up at the trough. I have been by Sal's twice. Both times it was to a large extent empty. It was also dirty, noisy, awekward, and the service was poor. I waited 5 mins to be seated, 5 mins to pay at the door, and I must have seen 7 employees bring different things to my table throughout the evening. The pianist upstairs may have been talented, but the way the architechure of the building created an echo he sounded like flagelence in a toilet after a night of going hard. My point is that although it is a good thing that the Sal's is being used (according to Jammin) I think its a horrible way to display Winnipeg. It's hard to sell Winnipeg to newcomers when our Icon is a retro dinner. The Forks is a great attraction, With the hotel and skate park as additions it's something to appreciate. But the grease pit?!? I certainly don't think it first in. Btw, what is going to happen in winter? Are people going to walk that far to eat a burger? And if they don't do something about that parking lot it's going to spell disaster (I tore my bumper off in that lot). FreedomFries says: 2005-10-10 18:12:51 It's good to see people are going there. I originally thought it would be a good idea to have an ice cream shop on the bridge, that way they wouldn't have to worry about winter and they could shut down. The bridge was an excellent investment for Winnipeg though, driving into downtown across the bridge has to be the nicest view of the city. Very beautiful! Anonymous says: 2005-10-12 08:05:06 I went there and the food was cold and service was bad. But on the upside i had to walk there. They should made it into a Tim Hortons drive through thus creating a 24/7 traffic jam trying to get into St. B. Anonymous says: 2005-10-12 11:23:54 On a related note, I cannot STAND people who refer to that place as the "Dink bridge" or the "Penis bridge"... look- if you're seeing male genitals every time you see a vertical structure, seek counselling! Anonymous says: 2005-10-12 12:31:29 That's a horrible idea. We want to increase traffic flow into St. B. this way we will have to be around the french less. I like the idea of calling it a penis bridge. good call on that one! Anonymous says: 2005-10-13 19:42:40 I think that Salisbury House, if not alone, then especially Sals on the bridge, is the BIGGEST waste of tax payer money i have ever seen. What on earth possessed anyone in power to decide that a trashy truck stop restaurant owned by a trash-bag of a celebrity needed to be built in the middle of the bridge... perhaps they should have though this one through. The only people known to actually go to Salisbury House are older.. Now, older people do not want to walk half way up a bridge in the summer, nevermind halfway up a bridge in the winter...the food is aweful and the prices for that food are offensive. Might as well have sold the space to McDonalds! Therefore I guess you could conclude that to my opinion, Salsbury House, is definately NOT Winnipeg! THETRUTH says: 2005-10-19 03:24:18 Although i see Sal's making it through the winter on the bridge, i don't anticipate them making it through a year after that. I like Sals, sure it is not the greatest restaurant, but there is something to be said about a greasy burger made entirely on a greasy grill bun and all. mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. beej says: 2006-10-14 23:27:23 The very concept of a restaurant on that bridge is absurd. The fact that is a Sal\\\'s just proves the old adage: \\\"You get what you deserve\\\". BigB says: 2006-11-20 16:41:27 Does anyone find it 'queer' (pun intended) that we have a bridge shaped like a penis that was built at the same time as Glenn Murray (homo) was mayor? IJustWannaSayThis says: 2006-11-21 13:03:34 Do you get to park in special parking spots, being that retarded? Sometimes a spire is just a spire. If you are able to compare that to your penis I suggest you seek medical attention. Personally, I don't find the bridge all that objectionable. It's nothing amazing, and the restaurant seems a total waste, but I don't see it on a daily basis. And hey, if it looks good on a calendar, what do I care? SOLMoFo says: 2008-01-06 15:31:42 Shame on all of you for ripping on that bridge diner... it's the symbol for Winnipeg! We're hard to get to (with our s***e roads) and not very rewarding once you get there. dubbledubble says: 2008-01-26 00:56:33 Sals is overpriced |

it's true that the sals represents winnipeg,it's just a pity that burton cummings feels he has to charge such high prices for winnipeggers to enjoy the food
