New Stadium

A rant by: jack49

I think winnipeg needs a new stadium. I know our bombers sucked this yaer but a new stadium would be great for the city. Build one donwtown like the MTS centre. Sure there'd be anohter groupd of building huggers if they had to tear down some more buildings for it but who cares? They dont even have to tear down buildings, they can build it by the train tracks around higgins. Tons of room, and that area would actually start to look nice. new buildings would go up around it, and our downtown would expand. Maybe Shaw can buy it and we'll have the Shaw centre.

I think that would be a perfect area. Like you said there is tons of space by the tracks, and then the area in the north builds up and slowly the area from Higgins back to Portage will build up, people will improve their homes, and more people will move back down town.

Wow, great idea people. Maybe we can have parades where money falls from the sky once a month too. Wouldn’t that be superneat! We aren’t a major city. We are the same boom/bust city that we have been for the last 50 years. First of all, what’s wrong with our current stadium? It rarely is full, is a good location and is still fairly updated. Secondly, We are barely hanging onto the Bombers as it is. If the ticket prices go up another $20 to compensate for a new building do you think we will get more fans? Maybe for the first year or two people will like the idea of a new building, but in the long run it’s going to hurt the business. And then what will they do with the old stadium? Tear it down and make another mall? Or maybe we can have 150ppl show up to kids football games. Winnipeg will never be the city you delusional people want it to be. WAKE UP!

The old stadium can be used to house hurricane victims.

You know BigB, you should read the latest Commercial Property Guide. It talks about the downtown resurgance. Before the new millenium, people in Winnipeg thought like you. Since then we built the MTS Centre and built the Red River College down town, and everything is changing. Your grand children will probably love downtown in the future.

"We are the same boom/bust city that we have been for the last 50 years" - Yeah we were........but now were actually doing things to change the city. think of the city as an investment, you have to put money into it if you want it to grow. your probably the type of person that would sit and wait for a job to come to u without actually going out to look for one

im talking about bigb

Was that a burn? Your right. I am the type of guy that has jobs come to me. But thats because I have am qualified to do a lot more then most people and i have very desireable characteristics. But I don't think we are here for a job interview. Winnipeg's economy will never be at a high. It may go up a bit, but the fact is the city will never have a whole lot to offer to people. It's a place to be near friends and family this is the extent of attraction. Maybe if we put a hotel at the forks they will come? ERRRRRR guess again. Who about the MTS centre and a skate park? Ya, i don't think people go "wow, winnipeg has a skate park and a downtown stadium. And look at that penis bridge! lets leave Toronto and move to the booming city of winnipeg." These sort of things do happen. But those are the people of Gimili, Rosenort and perhaps Minnedosa. The law has spoken.
jack49 says: 2005-10-26 21:54:06
It's called motivation idiot! You build one thing, the next thing comes, Arena, Skatepark, Hotel, Museum, and it keeps going. They don't all go up at once, but u can bet without each one its harder to get the motivation going. I'm not gonna put up a tim hortons on higgins, but if theres a stadium there its more likely i'll build there. You keep buying your lottery tickets and keep waiting for fortune to come to you bigB, the rest of us will make an effort to succeed.

BigB says: \" And look at that penis bridge!\" .... hey buddy, if you\'re seeing penises and dicks every single time you see a vertical structure of some kind, seek counselling. Oh and Canad Inns Stadium sucks; we need a new stadium for the Bombers. You can\'t generate much $ at all at ol\' stadium. A new one with restaurants and luxury suites and all those \'bells \'n whistles\' would ensure a healthy Bombers franchise.

You people ought to get a grip. Nobody is going to build sky boxes for Eight Home games a year. Question.. Do the Toronto Argos play at the SkyDome? No, No, on a new stadium

The SUN today (Oct. 28th) states that the Bombers will announce whether they're building a new stadium or upgrading Canad Ad Inns Stadium at the end of November. I think they're gonna go ahead and build it. After Canwest Global Park and the MTS Centre, the Bombers stadium looks more lame than ever...
Anonymous says: 2005-10-31 22:14:46
Yes, the Stadium is a sad sight next to the mts center that just went up and the Canwest Global Park ect... although i have to agree with the big guy. Will it really bring more people to the games?.. maybe for a few years but how about 5-10 years down the road? Ticket prices will go up.. parking will be difficult, plus.. Higgins??? Come on.. Higgins??! I dont know about Higgins the best of places. I think we should get a better handle on the prostitutes and bums around there first if we are to make it a tourist attraction. I worked downtown for a year and could hardly handle it. The bums are everywhere and I got hassled for change at least once a day. Sometimes they followed you and even grabbed you. Its not the best of the city if you know what I mean.

^^ Ya but there's no incentive to clean up higgins, if there was a stadium, they would have no choice than to clean it up. Remember the pan am games, I don't know what they did with the trash, but they sure got rid of it then. If we had a new stadium they'd use the same measures from back in the pan am days.
Anonymous says: 2005-10-31 22:28:21
Im sure they wouldnt go to the lengths they went to during the pan am games to get rid of litter. If it took Winnipeg 20-some years to get rid of little due to the Pan Am games coming to town, then I assure you, there will be no changes to the area. I think Higgins is still a dump of an idea.
Anonymous says: 2005-10-31 22:31:49
^^By trash i meant bums and drunks. If that isnt clear then by bums i mean homeless people not the body part. Whats the worse that can happen. If they dont get rid of them they can maybe headline bumfights in the stadium, that would sell lots of tickets!
Anonymous says: 2005-10-31 23:11:07
haha... more tickets then the bombers could ever generate. Ill take 2 tickets for the bumfights please! lol
Anonymous says: 2005-11-01 00:49:03
Canad Inns Stadium is a DUMP. Just because this is "crappy little Winnipeg" doesn't mean we can't have, or shouldn't want better.
JT says: 2005-11-01 22:34:59
Winnipeg's stadium is actually one of the better ones in the league...Regina's is falling apart. Ours is better than hamilton and Ottawas by a long shot. Calgary and Edmonton have better stadiums, but then again they're bigger cities with more fan support. BC and Toronto games both look ridiculous with their domes 1/3 full every week... You have to realize that this is the CFL. I love football but once the NFL preseason starts my CFL season ends. We can't even sell out the stadium as it is. There's not enough interest in CFL football to warrant a huge project like a new stadium. Every town thinks they're a great sports town but I'm sorry to break it to y'all but we're not a great sports town. Ya we had the white outs with the Jets, but we were also near the bottom of the league in attendance all year. Ya, we sell a lot of goldeyes tickets, but they're usually free and who really cares about the goldeyes? and sure we're in the top 1/3 of attendance for the AHL, but we're in a bigger canadian market. We couldn't support basketball, we couldn't keep the Jets, and Wade Miller is a professional football player thanks to the Bombers.
jack49 says: 2005-11-02 17:45:21
OK JT, what should we do then to make you happy? How about we install a lawn bowling green downtown, then would it suit your needs? I like the idea of bum fights though, good idea Anon!
CreamSoda says: 2005-11-03 19:04:57
This bum fight idea is fabulous. Thats what we could use the statium for during the off season! We cant catch a few bums (which wouldnt be hard), give 'em a few beers and watch them go.. Bum fights it is!

Winnipeg Stadium may be outdated, but with the MTS Center in place, is a new stadium really that necessary until the Bombers become more competitive? Look at the situation in Detroit in recent years. About five years ago, the Tigers moved into state-of-the-art Comerica Field where they drew well initially because of the novelty factor. But after having a horrendous season in '03 when they lost about 105 games and had the worst record in baseball, attendance dropped like a stone regardless of the amenities the new facility had. Likewise with the Bombers. Unless they can become a contender again and not find themselves as good as eliminated after the first month like they were last year, there will be as many empty seats as there were in the old facility. In fact, we can see the novelty wearing off the MTS Center already if the Moose could draw only 6600 for the 3rd game of the Syracuse series. So what kind of crowds will the Bombers get in a 5-13 season? Winnipeg better not get too carried away with fancy sports structures for the 2nd and 3rd rate leagues that its teams belong to unless it can attract very substantial corporate funding, especially since infrastructure improvements are needed much more urgently.

Hey to the Baseball brain trust that wrote above me! Detrioit is in first place and one of their starting pictures started the ALL STAR Game! You don't wait until a Team is good then build a stadium. Front Office Teams can't contrl what goes on between the lines. Build it and they will come. Wait until they get better, that's funny!
Anonymous says: 2006-07-13 12:07:31
If you seriously think that a new stadium makes for a better team, then you're crazy. Especially if you're talking football. This will be obvious to most, but baseball and football aren't even in the same league! Baseball you might give a slight psychological edge to the home team who play a ton of home games per season. They get an advantage knowing the field really well. Not so much so with football. I mean how many home games will the Bombers play? You think a new stadium will give them an edge? In any case, for every team that does really well in a new stadium, arena, whatever, there are several more that stay the same or do worse, as instead of paying players top dollar they're spending their money on their new taj mahal.

Jeffrey. You ARE a loser. Get your spelling corrected. (Pitcher + Detroit). Get the donut out of your mouth, you seem to be a fat pig>

Wow, I must say that I'm impressed. Someone _still_ misses the Jets. Get over it!
