Move the rail yards? GET OFF THE BONG!!

A rant by: Vostok

Apparently some political stooge(s) want to move the CP yards out to the outskirts of town.

You've got to be F***ing kidding me

First of all, I'm BEGGING to know where they're going to pony up the cash to do this. It's definitely not going to come from moving jobs and industry out of town. Yes that's right WE NEED INDUSTRY. Sure most people may find a stretch of rail yards to be an eyesore, but they weren't intended to be pretty. They were intended to create jobs, revenue and infrastructure. NOT EVERYTHING IN THIS CITY CAN BE PARKS OR CONDOMINIUMS!!

Vostok's probably right about this relocation business. It would be too expensive for starters, and even if the area was replaced with green space, what makes anyone think there would be any great demand for condos in that area, especially with the crime-infested zones to the north and south of it. We've already seen that these urban renewal plans are hit-or-miss affairs. It's true that the Forks has worked out OK along with other developments following the rivers. Yet I haven't noticed that places like the MTS Center, the concert hall, or the Museum of Man & Nature have rejuvenated anything. Nor will the new Hydro building. The facts are that there are too many deadbeats floating around the downtown area and too the north and west of it. Why anyone would want to live downtown in Winnipeg is beyond me when there's plenty of affordable housing in decent suburbs that aren't more than a half-hour bus ride from Portage & Main. We're nowhere nearly as congested as Vancouver, Toronto or Montreal never mind even bigger cities like New York, London, Paris or Tokyo. Winnipeg is too caught up with these grandiose plans like a waterpark, a domed stadium, a rapid transit system, etc., while it can't even build and maintain its road system worth a damn. Let the railyards stay where they are because no one would want to move onto the vacated land even if they were relocated.

Green Space? I sure as HELL hope that isn't what these imbeciles are planning for the area. Due to the conditions of the ground from industrial developments such railways, it is usually YEARS before anything can grow. And then there's the riffraff that the North End is chock full of. We all know what they do in parks. And once again, financial issues. After ponying up the x-hundred million required to relocate and clean up the yards, even more is going to be poured into maintaining this damn green space.

This city has too many established neighborhoods in need of development. I say yes to moving the railyards only when our existing neighborhoods are renewed. Between huge sections of the North End, West End, Point Douglas...even St. Boniface, let's focus on these areas first.
