Employees in army reserve and vol. firemen ![]() A rant by: tmbrwlf I just got back from a trucking convention in Toronto and I'm still P.O'd over one of the lectures given at it. In the presentation the speaker had the balls to say that any employer who had employees on their staff who were either members of the Canadian forces reserve or belonged to a vol. fire/ambulance dept. should do their best to get rid of them as they are a liability. This guy was a complete idiot and if my lovely wife wasnt there he would have been a dead idiot. I am retired reg forces(still in the reserve) and been a member of a couple of vol. fire dept and in my opinion have these men and women on your staff makes you a better buisnes. by the was I have two drivers right now who are reserve members in Cyprus, lucky stiffs. << Back Add a Comment Comments ( Add a Comment ) tmbrwlf says: 2006-02-28 08:27:55 Ramrod have you ever lived outside of the city by the you talk I would think not. Anyone who has knows that it the vol fire/EMS poeple who save you, and they are your neighbours co-workers and employees. As for military reserve what does one expect from a country that doesn't respect its military BalthazaarRamrod says: 2006-02-28 15:21:20 I haven't lived outside of the city. That's the honest truth. But where are we right now? tmbrwlf says: 2006-02-28 17:45:36 yes we are in wpg but I am sure ppl from E+W St. Paul Lorette and other communities are on here to. plus there are quiet a few reserve units her in the city jane says: 2006-02-28 19:03:38 So anybody that has a viewpoint different than yours is an idiot. I certainly hope you were not one of our peace keeping force. OH, maybe you were..... in Somalia. Lighten up a little, a maybe tell us what his reasons were for his point of view, and what your reasons are for being so immature as to not take an intelligent person's opinion into account. You might be right but I wouldn't want you in my city walking around with a gun. tmbrwlf says: 2006-03-01 01:39:24 jane I have yet to call anyone an idiot but I do find ppl who have no problem call those who take the time to vol. for anything be it the reserves or coching your kids sports team a waste and a drain on a company very shallow. As for the speakers view it is very simple anyone who is in the reserves or a member of a vol. group be it fire EMS or even coaching should be held back in advancing in the compant or if you can get rid of them. One last point do not paint our forces with same brush as that of a very small handfull of class A rejects that were sent to the Airborne as punishment and we were expected to shape up. The ones sent to my platoon were made to queit the forces rather than have them bring us down BalthazaarRamrod says: 2006-03-01 14:37:40 Ummm, so attempting to have a sucessful business is shallow now? That's rediculous. If you're a member of the reserves and you can't fulfill your obligations at work, they will find someone who can and you will be a) let go b) put in a position of less responsibility and less pay. I don't understand all this "support the troops crap" I support the troops as much as the next guy. They have a job to do and they do it well and deserve our respect. But even though they have earned my respect I wouldn't hire someone in the reserves (if I was in that position) for a position that required expanded avalibility. It's nothing against them. It's business. tmbrwlf says: 2006-03-06 11:47:57 Rammrod have I said in any of my posts that owning a successful buisness is shallow...NOT. I myself own a buisness(trucking 7 units 14 employees). I do however disagree with you about not hiring or advancing anyone who is a volunteer. I have 2 guys right know who are in Cypress, I am in the reserves as are my wife and daughter. I may never get called back up but we are preparing for both my wife and daughter to be called, they are nurses and the way we keep on taking casualties they may very well end up overseas. They both work at HSC as truama ER nurses and the hospital has no problem with them going if call. Just a small point you call me an idiot but I am keep up the health befifits of my 2 guys BalthazaarRamrod says: 2006-03-06 14:45:38 Good for you man. If you're happy doing what you're doing and it's not affecting your business negatively, keep doing it. But I don't know why you'd get mad if someone decided that they didn't want to take on what you have done. Not everyone's attitude is the same and not everyone has room for this sort of thing in their business plan. I'll be the first to say that I think business today has become a little bit to cutthroat in how they deal with people, especially employees. It's hard to find and keep good people. |

"Having these men and wome on your staff makes for a better business?" I don't see how it makes it better. I can see how it makes it worse. Sometimes it's nothing personal, but they require more avaliability.
