Too much Grafitti in Winnipeg! ![]() A rant by: Winnipegger From Transcona to St. Vital to downtown to the North End, graffiti permeates this city. I frequently travel, and have lived in various cities across Canada, and Winnipeg is the worst for graffiti. Does it say something about the population here? Today, as I drove down Sherbrook from Misericordia, the stretch of Sherbrook from Westminster to Portage is disgusting; lack of new developments aside, it seems all existing buildings are tagged, and this pisses me off! << Back Add a Comment Comments ( Add a Comment ) Winnipegger says: 2008-03-10 15:53:24 The plan by the city is to pass a by-law that requires stores to lock up spray paint, and they cannot sell it to anyone under 18. This apparently worked in London, ON, and another few cities... Property owners need to take more pride in their buildings, and have graffiti removed as soon as possible; the city will do this for free! IJustWannaSayThis says: 2008-03-24 09:34:00 Actually this ban didn't really work in London, from what I have read. Also, let's remember that it only bans those under 18 from possessing spray paint and markers. Not surprisingly there are a lot of individuals over 18 who like to show off their talents. No solution there unfortunately. What is necessary are real punishments. Winnipegger says: 2008-03-27 23:02:48 Yep! If I ever see anyone tagging, they will regret it!!! Vostok says: 2008-03-29 21:43:41 Two Words: Jail Time. In some parts of the U.S you get three years in the slammer for tagging. Banshee says: 2008-11-03 15:43:42 Curfew for young males. And fine the little bastards. I'm tired of my hard-earned tax dollars going to clean up the mess these worthless, stupid little pricks leave. |

I haven't checked out many cities of similar size lately, but it does seem like graffiti is getting really bad. Not sure what can be done about it, short of beating in the heads of kids that do this. Obviously I'm joking, but short of doing that, what's the solution? After school/evening programs for kids? Get real. That sort of thing wouldn't have worked when I was a kid 20 years ago, no way it's going to work with the kinds of kids who go around tagging. I suppose one idea would be to lock up spray paint cans, or only sell to certain ages, but I don't see that such a solution would really work.
