Come on Canadians its time to wake up!!!

A rant by: Anonymous

Poverty....One of the biggest problems we have here in Manitoba....Taking a look at poverty levels in Manitoba....we see that it has not declined at all....Instead it just keeps getting worse....We have our big government officials just sitting back and really ignoring the fact that we have many who suffer out there.....Do they care.....No........These are the guys who sit in there big plushy chairs at work....collect the incredible income....and when they retire...a nice big pension......

Will these people ever know what it feels like to be in poverty....

Funny and us as citizens continue to allow them to do this.....We have so much scandal happening in our Government systems it is sickening.....Yet...we allow these people to remain in the political offices.....I really think there is something really wrong with this picture......

Our City Mayor would like to solve the problem on our street gangs....hmmmmmm, maybe if they take a closer look at the high poverty level in Winnipeg....they would come to realize that the major cause to street gangs is poverty stricken areas....Lack of funding and resources and help.....These kids on the street have to fight to survive....They really don\'t know any better....Our society has contributed to deeming them as no good for nothing....Not fair....These are human beings like me and you....These kids are not as bad as allot make them out to be....If people would just listen to what these kids have to say....maybe then they would see where there coming from.........Everyone wants to belong and own nice things....Even those kids on the streets.....Instead of passing judgment on the kids...lets take a close look at resources and help for them......Lets try to educate them and help them to acquire the education and training to get a job that pays well....Take a look at our minimum wage....could you survive off of that....Come on people we need to get with the program...We are all to blame...We need to voice and stand up to the government. We need to stand together and help out.

Until our government decides to wipe out poverty...We will continue to have problems....Unless the people decide to stand up and fight and rid the political system of the money grabbing politician’s, we will continue to suffer in a poverty world.

Cut off all funding, ie welfare, checks for being a certain status, etc. Collecting a check everymonth for doing nothing, why would i want to get a job? Then people can join gangs if they want, or stay in "Free" school that we are fortunate enough to have in canada and eventually get a job.

OK, I'm sorry to say that your ignorance of how our political system really funtions is laughable. Whatever made you think the political process was in place to help the people that need help. Our system is not about helping others it's about helping youself, your friends, business's that donate money to the party coffers. It's about money and power and nothing else. Oh sure the odd person is elected with ethics and high ideals, but they are soon deleted of any such notions. Elected MP's do as the party tells them to do, not necessarily as the people they represent want them to do.

wake up! there is no reason for anyone in canada to beg on the side of the road. An 18 year old healthy male is eligible for welfare. There is no reason for anyone to starve other than living with neglectful parents. If you made minimum wage and worked 30 hours a week you're coming home with $800/mth still...$400 for your apartment and $400 for whatever else you need. I wouldn't want to live that way but that's why I went to school and work my ass off to move up. Our child poverty problem is bad, and it is directly linked to our native population. That's not me being racist, that's the way it is. Making people dependent on a welfare system only hurts them (look at what happened in new orleans). My grandparents came to Canada with nothing at all as they fled persecution in their native country. They were poor, but made sure they fed their children and helped their neighbours. They had to start new careers and do things they had never done before. The second and third generation have been able to adjust and don't lean on the system. My family story is the exact same as most Canadians. Our families come from europe, china, india, and we make our own way. The natives keep getting treated like children and given handouts. That's the definition of racism to me. Stop treating people differently because their great great great grandparents were pushed aside. Our ancestors experienced the same persecution and we've stopped whining about it. The poverty problem is tragic, but self inflicted. DON'T give money to panhandlers. DO give money to soup kitchens and charities.

Well from some of the response that I have gotten....I can see exactly why this world has so many problems....Its people like you with no feelings or consideration for others....That’s why we have a world of Koss. Some Human beings are so cold hearted. Of coarse it is people like you that pretty much support the ways of how the government operates....Its too bad to see that the next guy only cares about one thing....and that is only for himself....Sad thing....I believe in helping those less fortunate then some of us...Also to make sure you understand...I am not looking to put people on to the welfare system...I am looking at ways to help people become part of society. Help them to come off the system....Helping them to find the resources they need to be able to get ahead....Helping them, because some of them suffer mental health problems. I can see exactly who the ignorant ones are. As I have always believed, what comes around goes around…..And one day I hope you get yours……I have my opinions, and you have yours…..I have rights just like you to come and rant about things. Instead of being so cold hearted, why not try putting yourself in these people shoes....If you had half a heart, you would consider it.

Hey... now I think I know where Ive seen you before.. arent you the squeegee that washed my windows right after i motioned for you to go away, and then waited at my window for money?... I think you are you one with the wrong idea buddy. You are part of Canada's bleeding heart society. You have too much heart and not enough brian. If a 'healthy male' is eligable for welfare then he is DEFINATLY eligable to WORK. The bums of Winnipeg are becoming more and more of a problem.. they know they get more money doing nothing and begging then they will make actually working a full time job. As long as there are street corners for them to stand at and hold their cardboard box signs, there will be just as many morons, such as yourself, there to hand your hard earned cash to them. We shouldnt be giving money to soup kitchens, mabye we should be directing these people to job placement agencies and Canada's Addictions Foundation, or we can shuffle them under the bridge with the others.. whatever we choose to do is fine with me, except giving them money of course. Giving never got anyone anywhere if you dont teach them the correct tools of what to do with it or how to make it. So before you go running your mouth about how everyone else is cold and heartless, maybe you should put down the squeegee and open up a paper and start circling the classifieds, then you will finally understand what it means to have a job, and you will know why the rest of us dont like to throw cash out the window to some guy who's never had one.

Funny I could be the squeege kid on the street....Only one problem....I'm not....I am just a human with a heart....Its people like you in Society that don't give a F???. So when s*** starts coming down on you one day....and believe me it will. You'll be the first one Bitching about the system....Everything is fine and dandy now in your life....Hey....Those things change quickly...So instead of using your brain as you so think your doing....Better start using your heart for situations....I can see exactly what these rants are in the Peg.....There Rants from Idots like you that make this world the way it is.....Thats pretty sad.....God help you all....

You are being to narrow-minded squeegee. The people that have posted are not having compassion on one person; they are having faith in a system. The same system that we as voters put in place. This nonsense about how our government is so corrupt is sickening. Saying we have a world of “koss” assuming you meant ‘chaos’ is like saying we have a world made up of mashed potatoes. The idea behind government is to eliminate kayos. You people seem to think that all politicians are evil. This is like saying all priests are child rapists, just because the few that were hit the news. I will agree that there is a lot of self-centeredness in society. But the people that carry this trait only care about themselves and the people close to them. If creamysoda gets a stroke of bad luck (which probably wont happen because he/she is the type of person that will do something about it rather then sit on their ass and feel sorry for themselves), they will have friends and family whom they have cared about to help them out in their time of need. Poverty is self inflicted. People drag themselves into debt. Health care is free, cost of living is low, and society is more then gracious. Last spring a reporter went out and found over 100 minimum wage jobs in an afternoon of walking around downtown Winnipeg. That goes to show you that there is work for the people that are willing to contribute to society. You say God help us? I think he has. He has given us jobs, homes, family and a life we can call our own. This is the same cordiality that he has offered to these “poverty stricken” crutches on society. The law has spoken.
Anonymous says: 2005-11-07 16:10:55
Hmmmm, fun that you call me the narrow minded one….When you should take a look at yourself first….I am not sure where you have been buddy….if by chance you read the paper or follow the news….You will see the government is constantly doing things and getting away with it…..Excuse the rest of us for wanting a country with out poverty……I am not sure where you get your facts from. Government Officials, and I am not saying all in government, but they have there fair share of crooks in the system….Yet as a Canadian, you don’t seem to mind them stealing your own money……That’s to funny…. And you except that…..Wow….They have you brain washed……Too bad you can’t see the forest for the trees……The government has not eliminated any chaos in the country….As big officials keep taking and spending you just agree with them….Hahahaha….Your pretty funny…..No wonder you got to come and rant here…..You don’t want things better for anyone but yourself…..Your a greedy person…..Let me fill you in on people in poverty….Ass????....No one chooses poverty….poverty is there and fully force, regardless of who you are or what you do, anything can happen….it can happen to you or me……The majority of these people who are in poverty, suffer from mental health issues….which most of them don’t know because they can’t afford to get the proper testing….or there not sure where to start…..F???. With are health care system….I have been through the system with a child who suffers mental health disabilities….so don’t give me any crap that the system is great….because it isn’t worth a hell of beans…..So unless you have walked in that persons shoes….then I would maybe learn to keep your mouth shut…..How ignorant you are to think that people choose poverty….You are a moron…..I can see you need all the help you can get….One day your time will come……Unfortunately if you know anything about god….he does not hand things to people on a silver platter….The person who can have it all, can be the worst person…do you believe god gave him those things….if you do I feel sorry for you….

**Wipes grin off face**. That was cute. Goes to show that mental illness may be hereditary. How many times will you threaten us with “one day our time will come”? As I tighten my bootlaces so they don’t shutter as much. You really seem to have a keen sense of stupidity. People like me will never experience poverty. If we lose our jobs we have assets to sell off; Cars, houses, woman and children, etc. We will never “walk in that person shoes”. We are not that foolish. I could sell all my assets now and live comfortably working a minimum job for the rest of my life. The fact that you think poverty is forced upon a person shows me that you have never earned an honest paycheque in your life. You do not need to deny it, we are all aware of your lack of education based on you incoherent ramblings. FYI: what the media says isn’t always true. And they have the ability to twist issues so simpletons like yourself can think the government is evil. Would people buy the paper if it wrote solely on the good that society is doing? On all the progress our country is making? As for healthcare…give me a country that offers better FREE healthcare. Start shaking your head. You are in the greatest country in the world and you sit and complain. “oh, poverty is so high”, “the government is corrupt”, “People don’t give me money after I squeegee their windows”. My shirt is soaked with tears. I have so much compassion for people like you, wanting something for nothing… Also, I wouldn’t be to hasty to judge me. I will never flip a coin to a able bodied person, but I assure you I donate more money a year to worthy charities then you take from me (and the rest of us hardworking people) collecting welfare. Thanks for coming out. I hope the library is open late so you can reply tonight before huddling in your cardboard box.

I so have to agree with anonymous. I think most of you people should realise that you have had a silver spoon in your mouth you whole life. Do you really think someone thinks to themselves, " oh I hope I can grow up to eat out of garbage cans and sleep under a bridge, be dirty and stink, be looked down on by people like most of the winnipegrant group. Yeah i'm sure that's the prayer of most poor children. I can't be angry at you people because I understand you don't have a clue what you're talking about. By the way, so somebody makes a spelling mistake and you BibB jump all over them. Maybe they aren't using Word spellcheck like you do. I guess you feel impowered when you can dump all over a person less fortunate than yourself. So what if they use the computer at the library, does that mean they are lower on the evolutionary ladder? And, then we have to hear about how much you have gathered on this earth in a materialistic sense. I hope your car can keep you warm at night, as it might be the only relationship you're capable of having. Later

So im glad to here you finally picked up a paper squeegee, since I here you suggesting the idea to everyone else, I hope you could find a pen from the BIF alright so that you could start circling.. Thanks for the suggestions though..but I already have a job remember. You know its funny, you think you know so much, but with such little education I find it hard to take you seriously. Of course people dont want to be poor, but if you ask them, its not like they particularly want to be employed either. I know you hate it and you will probably utter more of your creepy threats and "your time will come" shinanigans to everyone, but heres my little secret for you.. money is what makes the world go 'round, and everyone but you and your bum friends knows that you need money in order to be part of that world. My father is a manager of a major grocery chain in Winnipeg and he constantly complains how he is short people, and the people he does hire dont bother to show up for work or they steal.. pulling squegee stunts and all that...well you know what I mean. All while the starting wage at his store is a few dollars above minimum wage. People just dont want to work. And no, I dont believe all proverty stricken people are mentally ill, you should be ashamed of yourself for suggesting it Squeeg', and for the ones that are mentally ill.. well put down the crack pipe and maybe you wont be mistaken for a retard while you're high. And im not trying to dump all over people less fortunate than me, really im not... just the less motivated, thats all. And Roscoe.. of course BigB's car keeps him warm at night. Maybe if you would have saved your pennies from when you washed my windows you could have bought yourself a car this year. They come with all sorts of cool doo-dadds, even heat! Hey those things even come with wheels, so you can drive yourself out of the ghetto, over to your new job flipping burgers. If you can ask for money then you can ask if I want fries with that.

Everyone's ok with poverty untill you get carjacked, mugged or bothered for spare change on the street. Think about that for a second.
BigB says: 2005-11-08 13:27:51
No one is ok with poverty. It costs people like me money. Roscoe, what the hell is your problem? Because I have bettered my life and work hard for a good life no one loves me? Let’s not go making assumptions or anything here. And you’re right; I do use spell-check (also known as passing grade 10 English). You tell us that these poverty stricken people are not bad people and they don’t deserve the life they live, and then you tell us about how we wont realize the severity of their life until we get carjacked or mugged? Doesn’t that kind of tell us all how scummy they really are. But really, what is the difference from them taking a welfare cheque that I have given taxes to pay, or them just taking my car or wallet, which I also worked hard to pay for. You talk down our government system. The main flaw in the system is that we give taxes to support losers like these mugging carjackers. The kids that grow up in poverty have the same opportunities as everyone else. They get a free education (same education that middle class kids are given) and most of these kids are native, so they could go to secondary education free of charge. If they are not native they will qualify for interest free government student loans. There are technical high school’s to teach them a trade to better themselves. The opportunities are endless. I have no pity for these people. They have the decision to make and only they can choose their future.
jack49 says: 2005-11-08 15:27:58
I don't agree at all with you BigB. So if you were born into a family where your mom drank and did drugs when she was pregnant, then you were born and had all sorts of mental disorders. Then growing up your dad beat you, and sexually abused you. Now you're supposed to have the mentality to get a job? You had a good life growing up, these kids on the streets don't, they know no better. All their life they are told that they are nothing more than garbage and that they better just collect off the government and become drunks and bums. If you were in their shoes you would change, but if you were born in their shoes, i'm sure you'd be the one stumbling across main st during rush hour.

Okay, here are my two cents...not that they are worth that. I have to say that I have stayed out of this discussion for a reason. I feel like most of you just think that I am this American on her soapbox, but the truth is I really do care about most of the issues that are discussed here. I have to say that what I have seen of poverty here is nothing compared to poverty in Cincinnati. Maybe you have more social programs...I don't know what the reason might be. Poverty is more than not having money and I think that is what the majority of people look at when considering this issue. The fact is you do have a lot of programs in this country that keep people from ever being truly impoverished. I mean imagine not having any money or any food or shelter and also not having any way to get medical attention if you need it. No offense but if you have access to a computer than the likleyhood of you being truly poor is not feasible. Even if you are only able to access the computer from a library you still need a permanent address to do so. Unfortunatly, for anonymous there are plenty of resources here if you are indeed poor. However, most of these programs apply to adults. There need to be more programs in place for youth in specific... Native youth. I don't want to open up a can of worms and yes there are other kids that are in poverty. I just notice that the majority of the poverty I have seen is within that people group here. In the States it is the African-American population. The kid's on the street that have to fight to survive are having to do that because they do not have PARENTAL SUPPORT. The behavior's that are exhibited are learned from the environment that these children are brought up in. It is hard to SAVE every one of these kids and there are a lot of problems within the System. My husband has worked in this system with at-risk youth for a number of years. All this being said the poverty that is experienced here is far less of a problem than it is most places and in most countries. We have the opportunity to live in a country that has a lot to offer. You might have to struggle at a minimum wage job or work two jobs to make ends meet. Since when did hard work become such a bad thing?

When you think to yourself that most people want to retire and some of the elderly have a tough time making ends meet, but they deserve better than eating dog food. So to with the impoverished, they have just decided to retire at 18. This really has you people ticked off because you think everybody has to see the world the same way you do. If you wish to work hard to enslave your life to materialism as it were, go ahead, just don't think everybody has to follow your lead. You sound like you are angry because these guys appear to you to be enjoying life in a way you can't comprehend, and ignorance usually breds anger. As for this country being so great .... you better give your head a shake. When is the party, be fun to meet everybody. I think I'll get BigB a shopping cart and a bottle of glue for chrismas. I agree with Anonymous. Poverty is a very big problem through out Canada. We call ourselves Canadians. We can send piles of money to other countries that are in great need of help. If you look at the rising numbers of people on poverty in Canada, you find the numbers alarmingly high. Its okay for us to take care of those in other countries, I agree! We do have to check out our own back yards first, and that seems to be the problem with our Government officials. We Canadians who have been born and raised here in Canada our put last on the help list. That’s a crying shame. Let’s take a prime example here. Take a couple who has a family off four children. The Father and Mother work extremely hard to make ends meat. The parents take there hard earned money and keep sending it to a families in need in other countries. Yet they have responsibilities of there own to take care off, in there own country. Their family’s needs are ignored and who suffers? The family and the kids! Giving starts with giving to those in need in our country first. That should be our first responsibility. We should not choose to ignore the ones that surround us everyday, yet we do. Is it not time to take care of our countries people first? Once we take care of them; then let’s pass the money on to other countries. We wonder why we have so many issues here in Canada, with families. Well our government like the rest of us chooses to ignore the problems we have in our own back yards. Sharing and giving starts at home. For all of us who have families, that is something we teach and try to instill into our children everyday. Except none of us practice what we preach. Is it not time for us all, to wake up to this fact!

A couple of years ago, I wrote an article for my university's paper about being poor in Winnipeg. Actually, a few people in our bullpen wrote the article. A few went out into the streets pretending to be poor and seeing what was out there for the poor while the team I was on went out and interviewed the people on the street. A lot of our poor people have mental problems, a lot of them have substance abuse problems and the majority of them don't want to work. One person we talked to said he was a driver for Henry Armstrong's, but they fired him. They fired him because he had refused to wear his seatbelt and kept getting tickets that they ended up paying. Now, he's trying to find work, but it has to be on his terms, and he refuses to work for minimum wage. If I remember correctly, he dropped out of high school cause it was too hard. Now that guy is of able body and mind (which, I guess, is debatable). He could work at any job, but he refuses. He'd rather stand on a street corner and beg for money to help him pay for his rent and the rest of his bills. And, because people give him money, he doesn't need to work. I can't remember if he was on welfare, but he wasn't on EI cause he hadn't worked at any job long enough to qualify for it. I'll give money to charities trying to help the poor of Winnipeg, I believe that they do a pretty decent job, but because of people like that, I refuse to give money to people on the street. If you're loooking for a country that doesn't have poor, check on another planet, cause it just doesn't exist. At least we try to help ours.

Get rid of the socialistic NDP's here in Manitoba who are bankrupting our province by 1 million dollars a day. No kidding "wake up". Enough with the hand outs, people need to see that without working for it, it's not gonna just appear. Vote Conservative and save our province from Gary DOer
Doomed says: 2010-01-26 15:17:33
Tired of the whine. Maybe tell some of those impoverished to go get a job. It's easy, check any newspaper, visit an online job site, heck, even go to EI and I'm sure they will become gainfully employed.
